Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
But you're not ruling the out the possibility of them removing their clothing onscreen, are you?
In more serious matters, does the talent have any formal subdivisions? It seems a bit silly that their main unit of currency would be worth (at present, and using the US minimum wage as a baseline) fifteen thousand bucks, but that's just me. The same me who holds as headcanon the existence of just such a subdivision, namely the mark, of which there are 4096 in a talent, making one about $3.68. Hey, free inspiration.

So that armor is rather uncomfortable for long jorneys in a small shuttle?
On a sidenote: Carl, don't you think that "drachma" would be a more fitting name for such a subunit? (Not that I don't like the term mark for such a thing... not at all... )

Seriously people, have you really been holding out this long for naked space elves? I doubt Arioch would take things in that direction (I don't know what PG-13 means these days), but if he did, I'll be really disappointed. There's a potential for a really good story, with great art, and you all want nudie wank-off pics??

I expect nothing of the sort from this comic. I was just making a joke that I thought would get a few laughs.cacambo43 wrote:Seriously people, have you really been holding out this long for naked space elves? But I think more "biological inquiries" at Jardin's expense would be pretty funny.
Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
*sigh* OK, sorry everyone if I got a little overbearing there if it wasn't warranted... and yes, I agree that more "biological" inquiries from Beryl could be very funny.

Let's keep it civil, please.
I rule nothing out, but anyone who's hoping to see explicit sexual content is going to be disappointed.

Formal subdivisions aren't really important, since the vast majority of transactions are digital, and most won't be in talents anyway, but instead in a local currency. Talents are used for large transactions, often internationally. But if you did find yourself in a situation where you needed to pay 0.000244 talents, that probably wouldn't be a problem.Carl Miller wrote:In more serious matters, does the talent have any formal subdivisions? Why do loroi use octal if they have ten fingers?

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
No one will ask or (as far as I know) has asked for such explicit content here and as a friend of mine, who is in art photography, always keeps saying: its much more important what you don't see on a picture; that is what starts your imagination. (<- very rough translation )I rule nothing out, but anyone who's hoping to see explicit sexual content is going to be disappointed.
But back to topic:
I know I will regret those questions, but is such "explicit content" widely spread among Loroi females/males or available to them? Would they be surprised if they found Jardins or Kirklands hidden stack of pictures? Or is that something totaly alien to them?

Because the Trade language and its numeric system are adopted alien systems, and not ones the Loroi invented themselves.Carl Miller wrote:Why do loroi use octal if they have ten fingers?
I can imagine a variety of tokens for exchange, mostly in local currencies or company/caste scrip, but at this tech level such things are just too easy to counterfeit, and so any transaction of more than a trivial sum is going to have to involve some kind of electronic verification. I'm not sure that cash is going to survive the transition from TL8 to TL9.Carl Miller wrote:Did the Alliance or Union at any point use coins or banknotes?
I'm sure it exists, but I don't think it would be common. Loroi females enjoy sex, but it's not a continual compulsion for them the way it is for humans. Humans are unusual (though not unique) in this regard; for most mammals, sex is something that's done solely for reproduction and only at certain times of the year. For humans, it's an important part of the social glue that holds a family together, and humans have an emotional need for it (or a substitute) even if they aren't in a relationship. And so we have invented porn.Suederwind wrote:I know I will regret those questions, but is such "explicit content" widely spread among Loroi females/males or available to them? Loroi males have a similar need, but they don't have much trouble getting access to the real thing.
Loroi females would not be shocked at the idea of pornography, knowing as they do the needs of males of their own species (though they might be shocked at certain examples of pornography).

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Reading the extra section, I came up with some questions. Feel free not to answer if the answer will be revealed in the comic, but here they are:
1. On page 46 no one helps Jardin up which he takes as an insult. Is it? In a no touch warrior culture, wouldn't helping up someone who can stand on his own be the real insult? A patronizing gesture that implies the other person is weak and infirm?
2. On page 91 the Loroi suddenly eject Jardin from the bridge and put him back in the brig. Why? Especially since the Loroi broke their no touch taboo to get Jardin off the bridge as quickly as possible. Even Fireblade looked worried for Jardin.
3. Does Lotai and the lack of Sanzai in humans have the same cause?
Thank you.

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
I'm not sure that it would exactly be an insult, but you're right that in Loroi culture, you don't normally offer to help someone who has fallen down unless they are clearly injured.Darroth wrote:1. This will be addressed to a certain extent in the upcoming pages. The short version is that Stillstorm wanted him off the bridge, and right now. She may have laughed off Kikitik's information as false, but it did not leave her in a good mood.Darroth wrote:2. Lack of Sanzai is common (the Loroi are the only known species with it), but the apparent inability of Loroi to read humans at all or even detect their presence is not, and it's reasonable to assume that those two elements are connected.Darroth wrote:3. Does Lotai and the lack of Sanzai in humans have the same cause?
Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
I just reread the intro of the Loroi warships page. It says the Loroi warships are colored green-and-silver in lieu of the emblematic Soroin caste. Is there any historic reason the space fighters of the Loroi don't bear the colors of the Tenoin caste?
And have Loroi craft, installations, or even caste members, of the civilian sections of their society the right to bear their own colors?

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
The Soroin represent the "main" warrior caste, accounting for the majority of military personnel on the ground and in space, and so it has become tradition that military vehicles (unless specifically in camouflage colors) are colored green and silver, whereas civilian vehicles are blue and silver. Prior to the conclusion of the Splinter Wars (which unified a loose confederation of Loroi nations into a single empire), each Loroi nation had its own warrior castes and color schemes; post-consolidation, even though some of the regional castes still exist as specialists, ship coloration is uniform as an emblem of unity.GeoModder wrote:I just reread the intro of the Loroi warships page. (And by the way, "in lieu of" means "instead of".)
Some civilian guilds do have distinctive uniforms. Most involve some combination of blue. Civilian starships are blue and silver.GeoModder wrote:And have Loroi craft, installations, or even caste members, of the civilian sections of their society the right to bear their own colors?
Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
A bit of frivolity... from what I've read on the matter, pants are guessed to have taken over from skirts due to horseback riding, but they also gained ground in anywhere with harsh conditions. From the Tempest tapestry, it looks like Loroi warriors have favored pants for quite a long time, but does that hold true for the civilians too?

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Were the ships to be colored after the Tenoin caste, what colors would they be? Presumably orange and something?
