Can Loroi catch a sunburn? If so, what color does their skin turn from it?
Yes. In humans, burns and other rashes are reddish because the blood supply is increased near the surface of the skin, so it follows that sunburn in Loroi would be bluish. Same goes for any other similar phenomenon, such as blushing.
I can see it now: Alex compliments Fireblade on something, and she blushes a bright blue before doing some violence on Jardn to keep the status Quo

Fireblade is rather dark-skinned (at least among the loroi we've seen so far), so it probably wouldn't be as visible.

In the Loroi tradition, customizations to uniform or vehicles are considered to represent a sort of medal or citation, and so can only be done with permission. Since they are a symbol of prestige, such markings tend not to be comical or frivolous. Examples in the comic are the crescent moon insignia on Moonglow's ship Tsunami, and the black Imperial Guard stripes on Ashrain's Black Razor.
Am curious if there's a list of these medals/citations, or at least the major ones.

I think that such citations would be individualized. The Loroi are the sort that would much rather gift a custom greeting card rather than buying one off a rack.

The two obvious general classifications of such citations in a fleet context would be a citation for an individual ship, and a citation for an entire squadron or group. The latter would be a much bigger deal.

The custom livery for a special unit like the Emperor's guard is sort of like the second case, in that the ship would still retain the special markings even after being tranferred to a different unit.

One area of space travel we are currently having to deal with is the lack of protection from radiation. Astronauts say you can see your cells dying when you close your eyes. Given that most of the races in the story that we have seen or have at least been mentioned in the extras have to deal with this sooner or later. How do most if not all of them space faring ones, including the Loroi, protect their ship passengers from Space Cancer?

Protection from radiation is one of the basic conceits of starship science fiction, along with FTL travel... it's a prerequisite to do anything. You need it in everything, including EVA suits. So we have to assume that materials science has made such protection relatively trivial -- that is, not requiring lead or some other dense material.

That aside, these ships use particle beams as weapons, so protection from radiation is a key function of the armor and deflector screens.

Yeah, I'm going to say that once you have the technology to travel faster than light, achieve 30+ g's acceleration in sublight, and fire particle beams across thousands of miles, you can figure out radiation protection.

Not sure if I ever inquired about this before, but a question regarding a hypothetical scenario. Alex was given an escort of a Teidar and two Soroin, in full battle armor, despite being unarmed, and obviously not much of a threat to any of the Loroi. In the event that more than one human had survived from the Bellarmine, one who was found armed, but unconscious, and deemed more dangerous than Alex, would the escort have been larger than the three aforementioned Loroi? And would circumstances have dictated more than one Teidar in said escort?

Alex's escort was there as much to protect him as to keep him in line... it doesn't take three marines in full armor and combat gear to subdue an unarmed human who is cooperating.

How additional human prisoners would have been treated would have depended entirely on the specific circumstances of the scenario. Certainly they would not have allowed an armed human to keep his or her weapons.

Voice pitch

Post by Urist »

Hiya!

Quick question: since loroi males are much smaller than females, does that mean that loroi males would have a higher voice pitch (shorter vocal cords)?

Loroi males aren't that tiny... eight inches or so shorter than a female on average. Males' voices sound similar to the females'.

Human males' deeper voices are, I think, a specific gender development rather than simply a matter of size; Peter Dinklage has a deeper voice at 4'5" than I do at 6'3".

I wouldn't dare think they'd let a human stay armed, even if the humans were guards for an ambassador. But it should be obvious to the Loroi that Alex isn't a warrior in the traditional sense of the word, and would react differently if they found another survivor with gear or equipment that would make it obvious that they are such.

Despite Stillstorm's insulting observation, the Loroi have no reason to assume that Alex isn't dangerous. He's bigger than the average Loroi warrior, and they have no way of knowing what kind of training he's had or what unusual abilities humans may have. I don't think any competent security guard would assume away the capabilities of a prisoner, much less one that's of an unfamiliar species.

That said, I think the Loroi felt confident in their ability to keep Alex under control, or else they would never have let him go anywhere near the bridge or the commanding officer, and I don't imagine that they would be any less confident even if Alex looked like Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Loroi guards are armed and wearing armor that would make it difficult for any unarmed human to seriously injure them... and Fireblade could kill him (or any human) with a thought. If a more dangerous-looking human had been very uncoorperative or outright violent, maybe they would have added extra guards... or maybe they would have sedated him... or maybe they would have just killed him on the spot. The only genuinely dangerous thing an unarmed alien prisoner could really do in this situatioin is to exhibit psionic abilities, in which case killing him would be their only real option.
