Arioch wrote:Well, when someone says "Yamato cannon," technically they are talking about Starcraft. As you mentioned, the gun on the Yamato is called the Wave Motion Gun (or just "Wave Gun" (hadō hō) in the original Japanese).

By the way, a translated version of the sexy 2012 remake of the series should be coming to the West soon under the title Star Blazers 2199. I'm stoked.
hehe very right, but it still can be confusing to those, like me, who haven't watch the original Space battle ship Yamato, or now planning to look at the reboot :D . I wonder how close the character style will be between both versions.

is it correct procedure to have a mop and bucket in your computer room, when hearing about the above ?

The Japanese version has already aired in Japan, and it looks very, very nice. The character and mechanical designs are very faithful to the original series, though updated, and the animation is some of the nicest I've seen.

One of the differences is that Yuki (Nova) is no longer the only female crewman. Even the Gamilons have female characters!

The ships are cgi but rendered cel-style. If Outsider was animated, this is essentially what it would look like.

I come back, see this, and my jaw drops as I realize; I've been away from these forums for far far too long. That was so ASSUME!

Also glad to hear about the star blazers stuff. :) I remember not watching GI Joe to watch Star Blazers instead. :)

I remember seeing some of those still frame images on Deviant Art, and wondering what they were for. Now I know, and it looks great. :D

Her name is Melda Dietz; she's a Gamilon fighter pilot. If you recall from the original series first season, the Yamato crew captured and interrogated a Gamilon pilot, and were surprised and shocked to learn that Gamilons were essentially human. In the new series, Melda is that Gamilon pilot.

http://www.animeflavor.com/node/38109 If you want here is the anime. Thanks Arioch. Still doubt the wave motion concept vs particle cannons though. If you ask me but this was discussion I am a bit late for! I just saw her and she identicle to my Serkin race skin and hair color. Also I clearly remember the originals were green, not blue. What I'd love to know is why was she treated so kindly, and not dissected I mean her people fucked over earth.

I only ever managed to see one season of the original Space Battleship Yamato, but it seemed to hold up reasonably well. The 2199 remake was pretty good, and although I wouldn't say it was perfect, I did enjoy it. (Some of the CGI camerawork felt a bit off, amongst other things, though usually not enough to be distracting.) While the situation certainly seems straightforward at the beginning of the series, it gets progressively more complicated as the story advances.

Also, while I didn't get all the way through the original series, I recall there being blue Garmilons back then too. Lord Dessler was always blue, if I recall.

Actually, the Gamilons started out with normal skin color (Dessler included) and then mysteriously turned blue about a quarter of the way in to the first series. It looks like they're going to try to explain this in the 2199 version in some fashion (the Gamilons are blue, but the early commanders are "second-class" Gamilons with Caucasian skin). I haven't seen it yet, but this doesn't seem like a good idea... such obviously out-of-story changes are usually much better ignored, especially when you're redoing the whole series and a retcon isn't even necessary.

First cars are all blue, and now the alien space babes you want to be real are blue. What is next on this slippery slope?

I like the animation. It's pretty smooth.

However, I didn't really find much of the rest of it good. Aside from it being, as Carl Miller put it, 'underwhelming'... Well, the music was jarring, the characters' lack of shading made them look flat, and I don't think the Bennet or Yorktown have weapons mounted on the front of the engine pods.

I applaud the effort though.
If every cloud had a silver lining, there would be a lot more plane crashes.

Its to make certain you know they're the bad guys, dontcha know. The trifecta of evil, they're racists, they're damaging the environment, and their weapon of choice is radioactive. Evil, evil, and evil. Cue mustache twirling and maniacal laughter.

Have to wonder sometimes why so much fiction winds up with such shallow villainy. Easier to setup and have the audience revile, but far less satisfying imo.

Well the author of the 2199 remake might have tired explain the original ( a la space 2001 or 2002). I'll have a look and see how it is, I did see the live action version of the film and I was impressed with it. Thought I few changes to story or effects for whatever reasons, still a good film.

hi hi

Honestly, I felt that the whole villain/hero dichotomy was refreshingly not black and white in the 2199 remake, which is probably the same as it was in the original. Most of the different characters had personal motivations for what they did, and nobody out there was really just what they seemed on the surface, including members of the Yamato's own crew.

Yes, the villains were pretty much analogues of nazi germans, but considering what is happening in places like Greece today, that is sadly, still relevant.

See, I take issue with that. The Nazi's we all have come to know and revile in media are most assuredly not the Nazis that ruled Germany in the 30's and 40's. They have become a caricature of evil, but in so doing people miss what is important. Everything they did was rational and well reasoned, from a certain point of view. The singular act for which we heap this scorn on them, the Holocaust, Endlösung der Judenfrage, is a logical follow on to the works of Marx. They didn't kill 12 million people because they were teh evalest puppy kickers evah! They killed 12 million people out of rational consideration for the greater good of all mankind. If you omit the overt racism and edit references to Germany and its people to instead refer to the nation you reside in, you can bring the party platform that brought them to power and, from experience, roughly half will support it. People will wholly embrace the politics and power structure which enables government to commit genocide if it has the inclination to, so long as they remain unaware of that inclination. That is terrifying.

That said, I haven't seen the 2199 version, so I'll have to take your word on that portrayal.

Its nice in 2199 as the way people behave and how things shift based on the out come of combat and survival is amazingly nice its great if you ask me as you can't explain this in a black and white manner. If you'd like to see it I can give you a link to the sight.

Don't assume that we have the same understanding of events, or that my understanding is the same as a media driven caricature, especially not without having seen the subject in the first place. I am quite well aware of how totalitarianism can get its support. ((Also, Fascists hated Marxism.))

As a Japanese production, the series was inevitably informed by a different viewpoint than the typical US media viewpoint. They were allies once upon a time, after all. So when the writers choose the names for many of the Gamilon characters after top ranking members of the Nazi party, the intent is reasonably clear. My own perception aside, it is not unreasonable to assume that they are trying to draw parallels, even if it is only thematic parallels. I mean, this is a cartoon about a space battleship that looks like the Yamato from World War 2, so I think some level of allegory is to be expected.
