In the First Time the Bentusi found the Great Hyperspace Core. With it came the gift of interstellar travel. The outer rim trade routes were established, uniting the galaxy in peace.

It's not clear how these ancient "cores" differ from an ordinary hyperspace drive. GameSpy's Allen Rausch referred to the cores as "Far Jumpers", suggesting that they are devices that allow long-range hyperspace travel, while ordinary hyperspace drives presumably allow only short jumps.
