Indeed. For the first time she actually doesn't look tough, angry or annoyed, but rather sad, depressed and tired. I would imagine she's "talking" about some of the horrors she went through during the Umiak occupation of her homeworld.

I'm waiting for the next page to come out to read what she's saying...

On a more serious note, she looks a bit... haunted. Wonder if she will actually grace him with her voice?

Reminds me of Revy's eyes in this scene:

Is it possible that when Humans sleep the "Mask" we have might fade and the Loroi can "see" his dreams. That's the impression i got from the WIP of young Jardin, it could also be a simple flashback story though too.
Keep up the great work and stay safe/healthy :D.
Maybe in a full REM state, since that's when the brain is in full data-parsing mode. Even then, it would probably require both a powerful psychic and physical contact.

My guess about the "mask" effect is that it's just a natural outgrowth of humans being utterly psi-blind by adulthood. It would also be of no surprise to me if children, often known to be surprisingly perceptive of things around them, are by Loroi standards modestly psi-active until their brains fully develop and go into psychic lockdown.

If so said lockdown could be learned rather then inevitable. Perhaps pci abilities could be trained rather then be allowed to atrophy.

I'm just imagining Alex having a nightmare in this couch fort and all the other girls there 'seeing/feeling" it, or something like he gets a bad headache and it affects them, when cuddling (thus close/touching).

As to the psi block and if kids could be more perceptive. Well... that's a good thought, let me run it though the ol' thought engine above and see what pops out.
It begs to ask if the psi block from a early age could also be trained out and make a human more perceptive as an adult.

I'm imagining Buddhist (or someone who is very good at meditating) monks who could be sensitive.

I don't think it's a block or mask. That might simply be the interpretation of the Loroi, who have never encountered such a psychically "mute" species before. To them, only an active Lotai would have that effect. Kind of like interpreting the manner in which a tree stands as an active vertical motion. The Loroi psy-powers are unknown and mysterious, so why they work sometimes and not others is just as mysterious.

But why would we want to get rid of them? It's a massive advantage if we ever get integrated in the Union for the other (non-Loroi) races to have a species among them capable of defeating the otherwise insurmountable edge the empire has. The only reason the Loroi decided to form the Union after calling the other species' bluff following the Mannadi conflict (instead of violently smashing them outright) is basically a combination of tiredness, laziness, and opportunity for bloodless expansion. Their isolationism and general mild distaste for the affairs of xenos is basically what allowed the other races to still prosper somewhat even under foreign rule. No telling if the Loroi emerge from this conflict mostly unchanged but shaken, or as bloodthirsty, Exterminatus crazed maniacs. And humanity has the bargaining chips in that case.... assuming the Union survives at all (their chances seem veeeeery slim at the moment).

We might want to get rid of our Lotai so that the Loroi don't find a pretext to squash us while we're still contained to a handful of worlds. At least until we get our bearing in interspecies diplomacy. And unless the Loroi learn how to detect unwilling humans, whatever technique we use can always be not applied.
Assuming the Loroi win, they will have a window of opportunity inbetween breaking the Umiak and ending the war, in which details such as the human species can be handled. Who could stop their fleets with the Umiak no longer a threat?
It depends on how ruthless Loroi leadership is. In the current state, we have to assume the worst. Once things calm down and wartime measures have been lifted, humanity might be able to meaningfully spread to the territory of other species. The Nissek for example should be very interested in human settlers.

And does Fireblade look happy to anybody else? Having one eye also suits her really well.
