Re: sci-fi creative writting tips?

Or Star Trek Star Trek's approach to technology is generally a combination of applied handwavium and concentrated technobabble. Or is it the other way around? Still, Star Trek is generally sufficiently out there in the realm of soft sci fi that nobody really expects Trek to be particularly realisti...

Re: sci-fi creative writting tips?

That's only if you're going with magnetic drivers. Which, admittedly is generally going to be the most common form of mass driver. Gravitic drivers would settle the dead weight issues, but it wouldn't do a thing for the acceleration issues. True. That's how Mass Effect does it, not that they would ...

Re: sci-fi creative writting tips?

Hello! No. 2: What would be the best way to shield a ship against lasers? Maybe some kind of regenerative or cooled armor? I have problems to imagine how a Star Trek type deflector shield could work here... http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/spacewardefense.php#id--Armor "the maximum aspe...

Re: sci-fi creative writting tips?

If you're going for soft then it's easy. The hitting power of a mass driver will far outstrip the effectiveness of any other plausible weapon except a Tsar Bomba level nuke. If anyone asks how you're shooting a slug at 300kps just respond "SCIENCE!" and leave it at that. Yes and no ... take soft ma...

Re: Loroi abilities, and Loroi Judo

I always find it amusing when people go "OH CUTE!" and rush towards a wild animal and then get hurt. Like those retards who climb into zoo enclosures, I think they should be left in there permanently. C'mon, man, that's harsh, cruel, and uncalled for. They shouldn't have to put up with that. What d...

Re: sci-fi creative writting tips?

Yeah ... how soft/hard you want your universe will be is a major factor on evaluating the viability of various systems.

If you're going with a harder universe, mass drivers, barring specific tech constraints, are likely to be largely ineffective, and require extremely short ranges to be viable.

Re: sci-fi creative writting tips?

An example would be Mass Effect. Though, I have to say, I'd expect mass drivers would be made largely ineffective relatively early on, because (a) ships can maneuver, and (b) you'd need kinetic durability to deal with impacting space debris and such at higher relative velocities. Oh, there you go, s...

Re: Page 101: And I will take VERY good care of you!

So no Human/Loroi hybrids, oh well there's always adoption! I could be wrong but I think Arioch mentioned earlier that the similarities between Humans and Loroi would be a future plot point about who the Loroi are descended from (the Sola?). This could be a Farscape like situation where the Sola ha...

Mr moderator fredgiblet sir, you clearly have sources of information that I have not been able to find. Stats pages for the Outsider characters in some kind of game. Are they canon, and where are they located? http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z206/fredgiblet/gurps_beryl2-1.gif Thanks - I should h...

Re: Loroi abilities, and Loroi Judo

Anyways ... the original point was that an early gun-armed soldier would have been more expensive (for his time) than a pike infantryman (for his time). Pikemen are not replacements for arquebusiers and vice versa. Arequebusiers are replacements for longbow/crossbowmen primarily, the guns might be ...

Re: Loroi abilities, and Loroi Judo

Early guns were relatively simple , mechanically speaking, true. However ... the actual process of making one required a relatively rare specialist - gunsmiths were less common than armorers. Making one was very much not cheap, though I'll concede the raw materials wouldn't have been extraordinarily...

daelyte: two points, first being you can fight with only one arm but not with only one leg. second, LACK of space can also work to your advantage, if for instance you are on a small rope bridge you will only face one at a time, or a small alley same thing, two can move side by side but in a fight t...

The guards are clearly thinking "I feel sorry for the poor bastard".

I have to admit, if I were in Alex's place, I'd be feeling more than slightly terrified at how Beryl is acting in the last few panels. She's scary cheerful about it.

Almost exactly what I was thinking.

You'd think the Loroi would have an even more enhanced (relative to humans) opinion on personal space, due to their thing about physical contact.

Re: Page 100

The "Rosetta Stone", so to speak, is in the heads of the humans fluent in Trade. Also, the "rosetta stone" would not need to be particularly durable as you would not need - or want - for it to survive the destruction of the ship. Plus, there's also the handy fact that with computers and various data...
