Re: Terran Ship Classes
If the loroi wanted to send a fleet on a wide flanking maneuver it would be much faster with human help because they could backtrack the bellarmine's path to human space and then continue on through the route the orgus used to flee from up arm. That would put them behind the umiak lines in well-map...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
You can't do underway replenishment while flying in the engine plume of the ship in front of you. You can if you tether the ship you are refueling to another that pulls it from a far enough distance. If you run a fuel line from the ship you refuel to the one pulling it you can even relay fuel to ye...

Re: Fan Theories on How the Umiak can hide from the farseers
Actually it is more complicated to reach INNER planets. To outer planets a "simple" Hohmann transfer orbit will do. Extra mass required because of the "dust and debris" still present in the inner Deinar star system? Either for shielding or propellant? Other circumstances, other methods to solve the...

Re: Fan Theories on How the Umiak can hide from the farseers
A full-blown planet with a dense atmosphere requiring specifically constructed landers. Easyly tested in your own atmosphere... Not so easily if conditions are sufficiently different. Not with a fledgling technology base as the Deinar Loroi would've had in that time of their history First in going ...

The insider says that Listel act as telepathic archives, witnessing important conversations and committing them to memory. We also see them doing other jobs such as tactical analysis and scientific research. Do some Listel act purely as archives with the other jobs being separate specializations, o...

Re: Fan Theories on How the Umiak can hide from the farseers
Actually, its already 66-and-counting years since the first artificial satellite (Sputnik) temporarily achieved orbit. With a first interplanetary (manned) mission nowhere in sight. Moon or planet is no big difference from a technical view - lander is lander, pack some more supplies in a bigger roc...

Re: Fan Theories on How the Umiak can hide from the farseers
Second: Another hint for this is imo their relatively slow technlogical progress: Tech wise, the Loroi ain´t no overlords. It´s imprinted in their culture, and their usually long lives also contribute to a mere conservative approach to any sort of progress. It took them ~425 years from early indust...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Not technically true. The vast majority of our species "history" (if you are including pre-history) was spent as hunter gatherers. Cultures that were more centrally organized specifically for warfare were always a minority. Most human beings didn't live within formal kingdoms or empires until compa...

Re: Page 222: Take Care What You Choose For Cover
Regarding cameras, it does seem like if they aren't aware of the intrusion into the ship yet, they probably will be shortly. The ones that aren't dead are very well aware. But by this point the Loroi are already in control of the bridge, the magazine, and main engineering. "All hands to the Battle/...

Re: Page 221: Big realizations and Big Doors
Seems like it might make for some possibly fatal (for Alex) jump-scares of the Loroi if Alex does get separated from Beryl or the Loroi otherwise lose track of him, no? Or maybe they can still sense he's there (and certainly I'd think he would 'read' as non-Umiak), just nothing more than a presence...

I realize the stars of such short-timed binaries are still millions of kilometers apart, and the orbit time is only so short because of the masses involved, but my gut always asks me why they don't merge.

A... new page?
From the narration, it sounds like the Umiak have the habit of designing their starships' interiors like a warren.
And the posture of those dead crew Umiak really looks good.

Re: Miscellaneous Umiak/misc. races question-and-answer thread
But I mean... this is a setting in which the ultra-tech civilization (the Puppeteers) understand less about how gravity works than humans did in 1687... because their homeworld didn't have a moon. Yeah, right. Wasn't that addressed in a later volume? Perhaps somewhere in the Puppeteer novels by a c...
