Re: page 83

Arioch already stated as much, but I'll rephrase and add a little on because I'm not sure we've covered this in the forum V2. Combat in outsider is sort of interesting. In order to actually close you need a difference in velocity, but at the distances and accelerations in question the resulting velo...

Re: page 83

Also we don't know exactly what they are betting on, they could be betting on the outcome of this particular "joust", percentage or number of kills from this particular group of Umiak ships etc etc, while routine perhaps it's not clear how far in the future their bet will end.

Re: page 82

Things to note/contribute: These are likely sprint missiles, not long range high thrust output torpedoes but close range high acceleration. Our sprint missile system does 100g acceleration in atmosphere. I may do the math at some point, but basically get the force applied by the rocket knowing the w...

Re: Imagining realistic energy weapons

@ anti-carrot Do you know what happens when a flywheel fails? I would not call it "not too dangerous" Either the flywheel gets loose, you waste a lot of weight containing it in the first place, or you generate a ton of heat as all of that stored energy (as well as the energy you spent getting the wh...

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs

So there are a few things you can do to extend the utility of projectile based weapons in outsider. 1) add an engine (basically Umiak torpedoes, so economically inefficient) 2) add a beam weapon (some people have talked on and on about nuclear detonation powered x-ray pumped lasers) 3) some sort of ...

Re: So, hm, speech?

@ Nick/captainsmirk While that could certainly be a cause for some confusion(vastly different pronunciations and slang) I was actually thinking more along the lines of mexican-spanish vs spain-spanish where mexican-spanish has removed an entire verb conjugation form i.e. 2nd person plural (vosotros)...

Re: Imagining realistic energy weapons

I agree on the power packs, although you could sort of fluff it away saying that it was some sort of fuel cell with a built in recharge via either solar power or a heat engine. Such a device is horribly overengineered and likely to not be very economically viable, but not much is in the warhammer un...

Re: So, hm, speech?

Another interesting point is that the Loroi have maintained their own dialect of "trade" the linqua franca of Outsiders. It isn't exactly like esperanto, but it is a language designed to be used for interspecies communication. I don't remember off the top of my head if the Loroi knew trade before it...

Re: Imagining realistic energy weapons

Only thing I'd do it turn around Mjolnir's statement to make it clearer (perhaps) for our less English fluent peoples: at planetary and orbital ranges light speed lag introduces only a small % error, unlike the light second lag we talk about often in ship to ship combat at which distances light spee...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

I can try to help "organize" once it's all formatted and try to subdivide it up into sections or something. Not sure if that would help Arioch, but at least it would be useful if it were a sort of canon guidebook of sorts that is a less organized systematic and picture-less insider thing...

Re: Imagining realistic energy weapons

Again I think it boils down to purpose. I mean we *have* energy weapons. Some are designed to be non-lethal others shoot down rockets and satellites etc (namely the microwave "pain beam" crowd control / area denial sort of weapon / the chemical laser powering the 737 laser as well as the one above)....

Re: Imagining realistic energy weapons

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUXXGbNS8oY Note especially the slow mo and demonstration on wood towards the end of the clip. A high enough energy laser or really any electromagnetic radiation based weapon would very quickly boil (i.e. turn into gas) the matter in the direct path of the beam (i.e. t...

Re: So, hm, speech?

In an effort to cover topics that are no longer present in the new forums: Another reason is sort of sociological, namely that telepathic communication with a hostile party (initially other Loroi) was dangerous as it involved connecting your minds which invited psychic attacks. Similar to how MANY h...

Re: Planetary Invasion/Defense

I'm not really sure you'd need very specialized sensors. You'd just need a different optic rather than special sensors. I think all you'd need is a different set of hardware/software pattern matching routines that are used to pick out targets (not convinced you'd need new sensors to deal with the ba...

yeah needing someone else to log in to roll slows things down, but the flipside is that it gives you a fairly robust world wherein you can do things like discover if someone is lying, have contests of strength etc.

Re: Awww

okay random thoughts: Call of Cthulhu is a fairly straight forward system. The fairly extreme fragility of character may be beneficial to realism, but less awesome for character longevity (look at the automatic weapon rules, but obviously you'd just use the basics of the system, stats, skill advance...

Re: Page 81

the only issue with running is time. They are stuck at likely half thrust if they're lucky and they're likely stuck going in one direction (or a small subset) due to missing a main engine. The blisters might provide cover, but you'll only get at best say 30 seconds out of it, which doesn't really ge...

Re: Planetary Invasion/Defense

Also it's not hard to acquire a chunk of matter large enough that you could sling it at a planet and cause damage over a huge area. Aiming is less important in that case, so you don't *need* to make anything fancy like a guided projectile, just calculate the trajectory and have your projectile have ...

Re: Geiger counter?

That's a very good link. And they point out another good info that I forgot to mention, a plane flight (due decreased atmospheric shielding from being at high altitude) is like ~8x a dental x-ray or 4x the daily dose (meaning it's like a ~1% increase in the yearly dosage). Truthfully I don't think t...
