Re: [Fanfiction] A Shout in the Dark
Part VI He might be thinking of some way out of this, but unless he's some kind of miracle worker, I'm not seeing any that would lead to a good outcome. The infusion of information she'd received made her wish she'd taken up an academic position. At least there, my input doesn't weigh on the surviv...

Re: Page 141 Discussion - "I think that was MY head"
Do something quick and easy when litres of sweat make sure you can seal up the cockpit again if necessary? What kind of military have you served in? Hey now, I never said she'd rip it off her hinges. Just open it. How much could a door like that weight? 200kg? 300kg? Easy. Since telekinesis does no...

Re: Page 141 Discussion - "I think that was MY head"
"Crank" the door? When you have at least person able to telekinetically exert several tons of force? That's not military thinking .

Re: [Fanfiction] A Shout in the Dark
I like it too. Definitely worth the read and wait. Just two things. They aren't even really critiques. 1. You've introduced a lot of characters already. 2. This is a permutation of first contact. As such you are repeating what a lot of readers of Outsider already have read a hundred times. Maybe co...

Re: [Fanfiction] A Shout in the Dark
I like it but was afraid you had abandoned your novel. I like the slow and ominous pace the events are progressing at, sets the mood just right with the implications of a contact scenario like this one. Am waiting for the next part. Abandoned? Heaven's no, it's just that real-life issues meant that...

Re: [Fanfiction] A Shout in the Dark
People often underestimate just what an impact places like Los Alamos or the Copenhagen School had on technological and scientific development. Having the political clout to set them up is generally the issue with such places. Fortunately, being in a state of total war tends to help.

Re: [Fanfiction] A Shout in the Dark
Part V It had been a little over an hour since the contact had first jumped into the system. Diane sat at the back of the large control room watching the screens and their ever-shifting images. She saw them move from still to still, slowly changing aspect as the objects they were focused on continu...

Re: [Fanfiction] A Shout in the Dark
Part IV The shock of the what she had just heard had hit her like a thunderbolt. Her mind blanked with a combination of panic as well as a heavy dose of fear of the unknown. She stared at the commander blankly, but her suddenly frozen expression did not go unnoticed. "Doctor Batra" said the command...

Re: [Fanfiction] A Shout in the Dark
Part III Walking through the long corridor towards the transport ring took a lot less time than she'd thought it would. Though he's running me ragged. Jesus, does he intend to slow down? Diane looked at the hallway ahead of them. It was darker than usual, as the bright white lights were dimmed to a...

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread
I'd concocted a descendant of the NSWR, the Antimatter-Catalyzed Fusion Boosted Nuclear Saltwater Rocket, which uses small amounts of antimatter to induce fusion as a neutron source to allow subcritical fissile salts to be used, in part as an exercise in stacking letters onto an acronym, and in par...

Hmm, seems like a dull day at the lab just took an unexpected turn :) Do continue, and, if I may say so, your writing style has improved greatly, I can smell the scrubbed air and feel the tension. Thank you, though I realise I still have much work to do to improve it further. Still, it's good to kn...

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread
Oh, I know the man's a fraud. But doctor Marchese's study helped shed light on exactly how they calculate things. Even if said things make no sense physically. Just goes to show ya NASA DOES investigate all manner of claims seriously. As for doctor Zubrin's... uhmmm...nuclear candle....well, when I ...

Part II "So, how'd the briefing go, boss?" asked Greg as she entered the lab. "Better than expected" she said sighing. And still lousy. "I take it the other honchos didn't like you trying to steal the spotlight?" "No, but that was expected. Spilling the beans on our little side project was still th...

Ah, Mjolnir, I see you too are amn of engines :D Admittedly I was trying to calculate powers of ten at 01.00 AM, so I messed up. The isp is waaaay too high. Muh bad... In my mind there is a hierarchy of engines: you start with chemical, proceed to solid core NTR (such as NERVA; the only reason we ai...

Ok, ok, so I've just had an exciting idea for space travel, and I thought that this would be a good place to share it. Some opinions (maybe there are some nuclear engineers or such browsing this page) are welcome. Some background: first, I was watching the presentation the liquid fluoride thorium r...

Chapter I - Stella praecipitans Part I Right, keep it together. Don't let these military types put you off. Disembarking from the elevator, she entered the corridor on level 13 of the administrative quarters. Two soldiers were flanking a door. They weren't wearing any armor, and their weapons were ...

Re: [Fanfiction] A Shout in the Dark
You'll notice I've taken some liberties with how grav plating works. Honestly, trying to picture the way directed gravity works is tough. So I came up with the ideea that the field of influence would be more similar to a radio field rather than a spacetime distorsion, like normal gravity is. This wi...
