Re: How humanity can affect the war, by turning the moon into a deathstar.

You say is theoretical but its not in Outsider. Its been stated that human culture allows us to advance far faster then other races due to open ideas. Outsider Timeline Humans independently went from planet bound to jump drives in ~120 years. Loroi went from planet bound to exploring local space in ...

Re: How humanity can affect the war, by turning the moon into a deathstar.

The horse stirrup is a example of humans missing an obvious and simple technology for 6000 or so years. Seriously when you think about it, you have to wonder how people could miss something that seems so obvious and simple. We have been told that the Loroi technological advancement is hampered by th...

Re: How humanity can affect the war, by turning the moon into a deathstar.

It works that way in real life, outsider has its own rules, Im talking what humans could do if it was real. Terran Heavy lasers appear to be Xray based on their damage drop off(beam diffusion) on the weapon charts and the size of the laser gun on a cruiser, Loroi Point defense laser appears to be Ga...

Re: How humanity can affect the war, by turning the moon into a deathstar.

Way I see it, Humans in outsider could already upgrade ships to fight at Loroi/Umiak ranges. I worked out the DIBS system in another thread... name was party a joke but the system is actually viable in theory. Re: How humanity can affect the war, by turning the moon into a deathstar.

I actually worked this out for lasers already. Humans don't want pulse cannons for fixed defense on something like the moon where space does not matter. Lasers all the way... 10nm Xray with a 1m emitter(assume this is normal terran ship based laser emitter size) 6.3cm spot size at 5000km 50.8cm spot...

This is cool and a first for humanity

New Horizons probe has traveled far enough two stars are in significantly different position then from Earth and represent the first known pictures taken at the same time. Its a minor but cool first for humanity. Wolf 359 https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/4p6BcvJZ65UGmfnHHf34V6-970-80.gif Proxima Ce...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

Did you bother reading anything before posting? Did you miss my post on how based on current synthetic muscles etc Mechs would actually be cheaper then Tanks? The reference of a combustion engine? Actual energy/fuel required? Lower wear due to reduced friction of bipedal movement over tracked? 10 to...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

Instantly detected and destroyed? How is that different to tanks? Tanks are already detected through ground and air vibrations including type, as is artillery fire, infantry, aircraft. Smart artillery rounds carry 2 anti tank warheads and have a range of around 28km. Funny enough the radar systems o...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

Where would technology be today if great inventors and pioneers actually listened to people like you? Lets review. Napoleon “You wish to sail a ship up stream by lighting a fire under its decks, I have no time for such nonsense.” Powered ships became deciding factors of war, first armored warships l...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

You can ride over soft sand dunes and muddy ground... it just takes more energy then walking. Czech hedgehog Stops tanks and other vehicles, mechs can get past them no trouble from what I can see. Trenches . Tanks can get past trenches in 2 ways. Slow right down and tip into the trench and then push...

Plus you can use things such as Self Lubricating Nylons or the like that may be strong enough to act as cartilage and have very low friction coefficients would also work. This type of setup(using UHMWPE not nylon) is used in hip replacements to envelop the metal/ceramic ball and hip replacements las...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

The synthetic muscles are the shock absorbers at least with hazel as it provides resistance when not under power like tendons and cartilage. and can even generate electrical power for a regenerative system. Things like the soles of the feet and whatever is used for cartilage if its humanoid could co...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

This video should give you an appropriate explanation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfr64zoBTAQ&list=PLVbxVQf7e2KRz1J34jFf7jDJFDT9lvnQ9&index=5 Why would mechs cost more then construction vehicles to maintain? Thats an assumption. Based on the numbers of joints required. Excavator needs only 3 ax...

14.6kg 20kw petrol engine(just engine not alternator) has working prototypes(google LiquidPiston) and is funded by DARPA. Its 25cm*25cm*25cm in size. over conventional petrol engines its key advantages are its cheaper to make, cheaper to maintain, cheaper to replace, more fuel efficient, far lighter...

Synthetic muscles are cheap, thats across the board based on synthetic muscles that already exist. HAZEL muscles are expected with the right plastic film capable of 2 million cycles, thats ...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

I can think of two seriously big military advantage. Humanoid Mechs can dig and do construction. Bipedal walking in humans is more efficient on soft ground then tank tracks. When you take out BMI moving 70 tons of tank or 70 tons of humans X distance on soft ground requires less energy for the human...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

Goal post Making Mecha work in a realistic setting. I looked at battletech mechs set ~1000 years in the future... and said if they were given extra mass they could work and some could work as they are. Didn't claim they were a good idea, even said I don't think they are, but they COULD work.. Which ...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

I like how you make a insulting statement instead of actually proving anything. I am sure I get things wrong, happy to have them pointed out, it furthers discussion. You had a view point, you now got emotional when your viewpoint was challenged, you even made a strawman argument of a mech running on...
