Re: This is cool and a first for humanity

That is cool.

Made me recall the pictures of Earth taken by Cassini which probably still are the most distant photographs of Earth.
I also like that NASA invited everyone to wave when the picture was scheduled to be taken

Well the image we saw of what Alex saw had Fireblade in it.

So its might be an image from someone else.

Of course it might just be an artistic interpretation of Fireblade's memory.

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

What makes synthetic muscles wear less at mecha than tank? If "wheels are so inefficient and wastefull way to travel" then how you can go faster, longer and less sweat by bicycling than walking? By making a road. Then off-road biking should be more tiring and slower than walking through the same pa...

Because its not easy. Even the applications where the benefit is not in doubt, haven't been done yet. But companies are investing large sums of money trying.

Well obviously we disagree. I think we will see things like Aliens Loader in the near future and there are companies beating serious investiment money on this.

True. Humans are also built for the world. So it does make sense to copy nature, which we are doing more and more as our science/engineering improves.

Re: Outsider 181: Foot-in-Mouth Disease

The Loroi have a society in which being insensitive is considered a virtue; it's a form of being honest. I've always thought it funny that we teach children that truth is a virtue then tell them off when they are "rude" Yet they all learn that good manners requires a certain kind of lie, with...

Well it is almost pronounced the same, "Sea man's yarn" vs "Seemannsgarn"

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

I think about one realistic application for mech - fights against militia in cities or similar rough terrain. Bullet armor is rather light weight for mech. High profile is useful to fire against covers and second floors. Also mech can just step over barricades that stop most of wheeled vessels. Als...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

Another classic reason for anthropomorphic battle armour is that you are an advanced alien species and you discover this primitive race that has numer of highly skilled warriors who you are sure could be very useful in your war if they could just somehow be equiped with advanced weapon systems? Hmm...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

I think that this thread has pretty thoroughly debunked any natural reasons for mecha in a military setting I always thought it needs the following conditions to be true: Direct mind control/bio-feedback of devices is created that provides significant combat advantage over more traditional controls...

I'm with sunphoenix on this one.

While all her interactions with him have resulted in anger or annoyance for Alex, I feel his interactions with her stem from some form of interest.

I don't think he is being too unthinking. Absolutely no reason why the others couldn't relay her stories.

Other than the lack of drama :D

I just wonder about Fireblade's reaction. After all, she is not 'allowed' to speak. But probably the other girls will just answer for her.
If we are unlucky it may just be a scene with the others saying "I am NOT saying that outloud!"
