Re: What Scifi Planet Hopping Via Scifi Spaceships Would Really Be Like
Why it's confusing is statements like "unlike helicopter spaceship's make quite the entrance on landing, liable to blow down houses or sheds nearby." If you're trying to take the universe at face value, then spacecraft in both star trek and star wars are very capable of landing and taking off with m...

Re: What Scifi Planet Hopping Via Scifi Spaceships Would Really Be Like
I'm confused. Are you trying to explore what various sci-fi universes would look like if you took what they do 'on screen' at face value and work out what a practical application of those capabilties would look look like? Are you trying to explore what interplanetary commerce would look like if it o...

Re: If You Made An Outsider-based Video Game How Would You Do It?
If I ever succeed in resuccitating my Atomic Space Navy project and advance it to the point of playability, it'll probably be a capable skeleton of a decent Outsider mod along the lines of what Arioch described. The intended mode of gameplay is tactical control of battles for, and spanning, individu...
Re: Dawn
Just went through this in one go, a rather good read. Characters felt rather distinct and generally plausible as personalities, and Twoface's perspective was an interesting one to follow. I have a few points of feedback, myself. The one thing I particularly didn't like in the story was the with Grey...

Quite amusing! Gives the suspenders of disbelief a bit of a workout in places but that's okay.

on the other hand, with the energies these missiles' engines operate at, being able to give them a good strong kick so they can light up at decent distance might be good for your paint job.

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
For my part anyway if you said Fireblade's helmet was vacuum capable with the hair out I wouldn't question that decision, unless someone tried to tell me it was actually a realistic idea :D As for the breathing fluid, the issue on my mind was if they had an open helmet like Fireblade's, shedding hai...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Fireblade's helmet came up in a past question, and if I remember correctly it was said that it seals well enough to protect against airborne hazards or partial loss of pressure, but if actually expecting to have to deal with vacuum for any length she'd have to get a closed helmet and stuff the hair ...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Here's a curiosity. Do all pilots have short hair out of practicality, or is the short hair of the pilots we've seen just an artifact of the low life expectancy of the job? It's short because of their youth. Their hair is cut off as part of the graduation ritual. Ah, I see. I thought perhaps the li...

Re: Page 187: CRUNCH
The news comment about the delay between pages got me to dust off my tracking spreadsheet for outsider pages. Don't look at me like that, I like to tinker with numbers at times, okay? This august was the first month without a page after 16 consecutive months of postings. But I wouldn't let that be a...

Re: How humanity can affect the war, by turning the moon into a deathstar.
The stirrup analogy isn't really directly applicable here anyway. To me this is more like imagining a culture that just invented the stirrup supposing a future where war is conducted with motorcycles, but that they could revolutionize it by bringing the stirrup to it. Also, the "Humans proposed this...

Re: How humanity can affect the war, by turning the moon into a deathstar.
It works that way in real life, outsider has its own rules, Im talking what humans could do if it was real. The problem with this approach is not necessarily the tactics or technology proposed, but rather with the implicit idea that these things are possible and for some reason only humans have the...

Re: This is why every AI needs the Three Laws of Robotics
Even leaving aside the practicalities of implementing the three laws, what gets lost a lot is that the three laws stories were often about the ways the laws go wrong. Hell, the first law makes for perfect justification of taking over the world to protect humans from themselves, depending on the defi...

Yes.can Fireblade DO pyrokinesis?
If not explicitly stated anywhere else, it's on the GURPS character sheet for her in the insider.

Re: Terran Nuclear Tech (split from Terran Q&A)
Fair enough, I assumed they were the circular structures on the front of the wings, but I suppose those are probably missile launchers if anything. Shoulda looked at the loadout more closely. 10m is probably in the right neighborhood for those.

Re: Terran Nuclear Tech (split from Terran Q&A)
The barrels could run most of the length of that wing structure, which is a lot bigger than 10m long. I'd eyeball it at 50-70% of the length of the ship. Since we've got profile views of the ships I tried matching the sideview features and came up with close to 54%, so on a 320m ship lets call it 17...

Re: Terran Nuclear Tech (split from Terran Q&A)
I'm not going to dig into everything else at the moment, but I am curious where the 10m barrel length figure is coming from. I understood the weapon to be fixed mounts because if it's size, and the smallest ship that carries a heavy mass driver is almost 300m. Was there word of god on this somewhere...

Re: Terran Nuclear Tech (split from Terran Q&A)
I get ~50m diameter at 50km with 0.057 beam angle. Right, I think I got crossed up and thought you were proposing that it was dangerous when the beam was dispersed over a 50km wide area, instead of being detonated at 50km. This comes from the idea that I recall being a starting point but I think we...
