Re: 3D Printing Outsider ships

I've tried to look at printing some models that are near and dear to me, http://p3d.in/ms6yC for instance, and in the process learned that ships designed to look cool in 3d often have features and structures that are a real pain in the butt to print at scales that aren't going to be insanely expensi...

Re: Homeworld: Shipbreakers

I haven't gone back through and checked, but I'm reasonably sure it was a point made in a few places of the HW1 manual that the limited habitable region of Kharak was noticeably contracting, with technology struggling to slow it down. So it's maybe a bit cheesy to use as a motivating factor here, bu...

Re: Stellaris: 4X Grand Space Strategy (Paradox Interactive)

I love Crusader Kings 2 to death, but my experience with it has made me steer clear of all the preview footage of Stellaris. Not because I don't think I'll like it, but because I suspect it'll be so monstrously complicated that learning about it any way but hands on will be futile. :D I fully intend...

Re: Homeworld: Shipbreakers

@NOMAD: The original printing of the HW1 backstory specifically said it had been 250 years since the last major conflict on Kharak, and the version printed by gearbox for the HWRC collector's edition changed this and some other passages as well.

Re: Homeworld: Shipbreakers

Other ship stories from the ship viewer(predating cata) refer to Kharak and to a Taiidani as a member of S'jet(edit: doh, you quoted that one). To me it seems clear both Kushan and Taiidan ship fluff stories were initially written as possible players, but they tried to retcon that for the cata manua...

Re: Page 74, Loroi order of battle

I'd like to second a recommendation earlier in the thread for the Lost Fleet series. It's got it's own few pieces of magic, like FTL of course, and few technical conceits that I don't quite buy. But overall does fairly hard sci-fi war with solar-system spanning battles filled with neat tricks and ta...

Re: Star Wars SPOILERS ALLOWED

Well, remember that the EU was entirely(as far as I know anyway) decanonized. There's no reason to assume that the training of the new Jedi in the new continuity was at all like the training of the new Jedi in the EU.

Re: Homeworld: Shipbreakers

Yep. And depending on the passage, Gaalsien and Siidim might be the names of kiith, or the form referring to the people of kiith Gaalsi and Siid(collective form?). What I hadn't noticed before is how many different ways the term for the people of Kharak was rendered, by the end I was disappointing I...

Re: Homeworld: Shipbreakers

Went ahead and did that , sourcing from the 1 and C manual and the unit viewer. It's always fun to roll through the little inconsistencies of the HW1 manual when it comes to spelling anyway. And some cheeseball things in there I tend to forget about too. Next I need to collect all the ones we've ma...

Re: Homeworld: Shipbreakers

Ah, I'd missed Sagald's last name in my recent trawling. That's an opportunity for interesting world building in my opinion, a common problem with people writing in established settings is too much reuse of the recognized elements and too little expansion of the world besides. But a commander of a m...

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread

One thing that amazes me about a lot of SpaceX re-usability detractors(not aimed at anyone in this thread, just a general comment), is that their payload prices are extremely competitive already, and that's with rockets weighed down by equipment and complexity designed for reuse but sold as expendab...

Re: Star Wars SPOILERS ALLOWED

I really don't think you have to resort to midichlorians to explain KR's relative weakness. Much as people love grey, everything on screen seems to indicate the force rewards pure light and dark over anything else. Hell, you can even extend that to the Vader vs Luke fight in RotJ, Vader was conflict...

Re: Homeworld: Shipbreakers

Much as I love the HW1 H&TB, when it gets down to specific numbers it can be pretty contradictory with both itself and the game. But the intention seems to be that HW:DOK is about 100 years before HW1. Re names: If she was named Ra'hel or something I wouldn't bat an eye at the name. I'd still bat an...

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread

Probably seen elsewhere already, but SpaceX just stuck the landing of a falcon 9 first stage.

And delivered some communication satellites to orbit too a guess, but damn. They did it.

Re: Star Wars SPOILERS ALLOWED

I'd love if it weren't true, but given how AbramsTrek 1 and 2 progressed I have a had time not believing it. Time will tell. One idea I've heard that has potential but would be damn tricky is for Rey to fall and KR to rise by the end of the trilogy, not sure how that'd conclude ultimately.

Re: Star Wars SPOILERS ALLOWED

But how much of that established lore is still canon after the great EU purge? What she does isn't particularly inconsistent with anything in the movies to my eyes, except maybe the glimpses of training in the PT, but a lot of that seems to be an effort to instill mental serenity before teaching any...

Personally I'd love to just get on with the survey. If insufficient planning causes us trouble later, that'll be it's own kind of fun!
