As pacifistic people who value the nature as nurturing them, I would put the Amish rather far up the ladder of list of Terran social groups.
They may, by choice, not be that happy about "non-believers", but they are not really pushy about their belief (they don't try to force their believe on you).

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
FML? Fix My Lighthouse?... Anyway, it would indeed lead to a very interesting de-briefing.... And a court-martial for disobeying orders... In a situation where the survival of the Human race is in peril... @ Razor One : Thank You. And yes, it escalated quickly. But in a war any encounter usually esc...

The genre for space battle descriptions: http://www.goodreads.com/genres/military-science-fiction There's also the Antares trilogy by Michael McCollum, which focuses on inter-stellar war and space battle tactics. The tactics revolve very much around the FTL-technology in this book, which is similar ...

Re: Miscellaneous Terran question-and-answer thread
Pretty sure they are. The question is are we (non-Amish) besides sentient also intelligent? They way we handle our resources and our living space, it is questionable, and can be argued that the Amish are smarter than us. (In " The Old Man's War ", Amish-like (Mennonites) colonists play an important ...

Can I be introduced to her?
Can I meet her?

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)
Can we sue the Soia for copyright infringement? "Genetic rights" law is still in its infancy, but if we use software copyright law as an example, if you were to create a functional copy of a program but you developed it independently and didn't use any of the original source code, then I believe th...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)
It would be easy to guess that if the two races are so similar, that we tend to (subconsciously) interpret the Loroi actions similar as Human actions, that the Loroi fall for the same trap. But they have other Loroi to fall back to, and warn them about falling for such a trap (if the Loroi mind is e...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
Between nations on one planet, yes. But between interstellar empires? Less so. They do not allow the non-Umiak on their ships, except for very trusted ones. They bleed your economy dry. So no chance of building up a covert space-navy to be able to strike... And since they don't come down to your pla...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)
Well, the looks of these blue Elves are deceiving anyway. To us Humans very much so. The body language of the Loroi is very "open". A lot of indicators telling you that they're interesting in you and/or the topic being discussed. So, yes, she does look very much as if she's tempting. But it may be h...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
Yep. The Umiak seem to be "obey, or I'll do whatever is easy for me to do to make you comply. And pain is easy to induce. Here have a feel how easy it is for me to punish you." They don't seem to be remotely interested in waving carrots. Sticks is their method. The Umiak also do not seem to trust an...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
Such things I attribute to the English language. Minor spelling errors, no big difference in pronunciation, both words in dictionary (thus dictionaries/spell checkers don't help), yet a big difference in meaning. My brain makes a lot of these errors too. After typing I often ask myself how I could h...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
I'm not that big fan of "fantasy" (magic and mythological beings), I'm more into Sci-Fi. I know most love the whole Fantasy-genre, and not just the subset of SciFi / hard-SciFi. I'm still looking forward to your books, though. (But I've never read or seen "Book of Thrones". What I heard and saw of i...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
Don't worry, I stumbled over it, that's all. I don't mind finding and seeing errors. And if I know the author is around and can/is/may be interested in correcting the errors, I collect them and make the author aware of the ones I found. It even earned me a corrected copy of a physical book once (I s...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
Just something I stumbled over: “We are seeing the same picture you are seeing Private, unless their telepathy can also affect computers we have to conclude that they indeed look like that.” Private Jeremy Hood wasn’t really a private; he his rank was temporary only for the duration of this mission....

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
Wow, reading your story and the comments in between. Dang, I need more time to read.... (I just finished reading chapter 3.) (The following is just piping in to a very old part of this thread, now on reading the next sessions). I just got to page 3 of this thread, and have a comment regarding the sa...
