Re: Anti-gravity

As an aside, light takes a long time to get from the interior of a star to its exterior due to the absorption and re-emission of photons by the atoms of the star, not self-interaction. It would be interesting to know if gravitons behaved in the same way. Considering a graviton would technically be ...

Re: Loroi Sexuality continued (no politics this time)

Coming back to our favorite comic, the insider states that the Soia Empire established itself around ~500,000 years ago. If the Soia (whoever they are) stumbled over earth, I think they would most likely encounter an earlier form of Homo than us. That would explain the sexual demorphism for example...

Re: Anti-gravity

My knowledge of the science involved is limited as well, I just know that some things can be extrapolated by logic alone (other things, of course, require math in order to verify, or even predict). For example, I can know that using just artificial gravity to produce an artificial black hole seems ...

Re: Anti-gravity

Yes, artificial gravity and intertial dampers are the two key technologies you need to make jump drive work. Ah, I had been wondering what sort of forces had to be manipulated in order to punch a hole into hyperspace in the Outsider-verse. Hard er sci-fi settings at least treat 'gravity-control' wi...

Re: Anti-gravity

I'm always on the look out for new anime, so I think I'll give Planetes a try. :) As for research, I meant with non-human animals. Some research has already been done (see my first post above). Sex is definitely unavoidable, but birth control and other contraceptives are fairly inexpensive. If someo...

Re: Anti-gravity

The idea of growth on the Moon was explored in the anime Planetes, where a Luna-born girl is huge. If growth is indeed lowered by gravity (which seems reasonable enough), it stands to reason that there will be a taller growth on Mars and the Moon. Note that a big problem on Mars and the Moon is not...

Re: Anti-gravity

So we should expect Mars born to be taller, due to the lesser force of gravity, and perhaps weaker in terms of brute strength unless something is done to combat this. In retrospect people born on mars and expected to remain there would not need any higher gravity, such as earth level, training and ...

Re: Page 91

I've always interpreted Stillstorm's expression as "one slip up, airlock him" and Fireblade's expressions as "Move!" and "Understood, sir." Hm, that´d pretty ordinary. :( Arioch has said that Loroi body language is very, very similar to Human body language. And, in general, reality is pretty boring...

Re: Anti-gravity

Speaking of artificial gravity, is it common tech for humans in Outsider? As in, you could actually find it in a planetary colony? Or is it one of those high-energy systems you would only find economical on a starship?

Re: Anti-gravity

I'm not sure if this has been answered before a search did not turn up much. Do Humans use Anti-gravity on planet that have in-sufficient natural gravity? Mars has only 38% of Earth's gravity. Would this not affect in the long term anyone born on mars? I think you mean "do humans use artificial gra...

Re: Loroi Trade translation request general

Mathematical concepts are universal, but each civilization may have different kinds of notation and numerical systems to represent them. Some may be easier or harder to use than others, but it seems to me that once you have developed computer tools, ease of use is really not that big a deal. Once t...

Re: Loroi sexuality

It's been made fairly clear that we will, in the long term, have value as engineers and scientists for the Loroi. I'll be interested to see if we have a scene where Alex brings up the timeline of human technology, because they will probably think he's exaggerating or flat out lying. THAT will likel...

Re: Loroi sexuality

Sorry for the double post but something bothers me. Beryl stated that frequent sexual encounters was good for their health (males) so wouldn't any loroi female who cared personally about a male simply allow other female's to "loan" him for the sake of his good health since she's clearly too importa...

Re: Loroi sexuality

Love is permitted and even encouraged, but attachment is not. Loroi females enjoy the mating encounters, and not just the physical aspect of them, and can develop strong affection for the male mating partner and remember the interaction fondly for many years thereafter, during the long periods in w...

Re: Loroi sexuality

What are the Loroi concepts of love? For a species in which pair bonding is likely nonexistent, I can't see them having a concept of romantic love. That could change, though, depending on Loroi attitudes towards homosexuality. As the Loroi do have family units and warrior crèches, I can see them hav...
