Re: Merry Christmas 2023 everyone!

Wouldn't it be easier for AI companies to place restrictions on their LLM's output, rather than the training input? It's not copyright infringement if the customer cant get to see it. In addition to the points that others brought up, that would be neutering one of the SELLING FEATURES of the softwa...

Re: Merry Christmas 2023 everyone!

Thing is, a human being given permission to look at and thus potentially learn from art could be argued to be legally distinct from giving an automated tool permission to do so. Basically usage permissions need to be updated and clarified as technology advances since it is not reasonable to expect a...

Re: Merry Christmas 2023 everyone!

Financial incentives alone are too large for there not to be. Though it will be interesting to see what happens once modern creative rights laws actually get enforced properly. That's my main issue with these tools, is not them existing, but them utilizing sources for training data without the expli...

Re: Page: 225 - Krak, KRAK!! WHOKK!!!

Not mentioned yet? Alex reaction: Drill kicking in, no fliching, determined expression. Go, man!! It's a bit trope-y, but I would be highly amused if humans turned out to be stupid good at in dismounted combat at baseline just because they don't rely on cybernetics or psionics. Just hand them a gun...

Re: Merry Christmas 2023 everyone!

Yeah one would almost be better off with an AI built specifically to generate initial assets in 3d format then handing those assets off to a human or another specialized AI for any sort of animation. And I imagine the AI dataset included enough art and photos with "proper" lighting that it was able ...

Re: Merry Christmas 2023 everyone!

It did do a pretty good job with the legs especially, and it didn't give each hand 11 fingers, several of them floating. It did flub the left foot/boot though. The sleeves could be written off as artistic license on the part of the tailor. Otherwise nailed the "Space Opera skimpy minidress uniform" ...

Re: Page: 225 - Krak, KRAK!! WHOKK!!!

Yeah the human skull and many other mammalian analogues aren't exactly paragons of durability either; the best grey matter defense for them is avoiding trauma to that area to begin with. Unless you are one of the few species that have extra dense plating, extra shock absorbing tissue, and other feat...

Re: Fan Theories on How the Umiak can hide from the farseers

Eh, I am still suspecting the Historians of some fuckery to keep the Loroi and Umiak fighting.

And letting either side get hold of a new client race with unknown capabilities would not be in their interests, thus motivation to destroy a scout ship and try to subvert the cooperation of any survivors.

Re: Page 219

There was a scene in "Earthlight" by Clarke (1955) that sticks in my memory. A warship's crew evacuated to a passenger liner of the opposing side, despite not having enough spacesuits. Clarke wrote that the main danger from the brief exposure would be sunburn, so they did as much of it as possible ...

Re: Off-Topic: Gaming

I've been recently enjoying Cosmoteer: Starship Architect & Commander, it needs polish but what is there has been fairly decent. Starts off fairly easy if you use the ship with lasers and shields, but you have to diversify your defenses before taking on level 5+ enemies or it'll take your lunch money.

Re: AI art.

And yes, at some point far enough into future, there will probably be AI's that will be much better than humans at everything. But since in that case, since everyone will be out of a job, there will be no one to hire you or pay for your comic, I don't see any reason to look too eagerly towards that...

Re: Page 217: Where is Cloud?

As for why she was chosen to die, from a practical viewpoint, I think it was simply because she would have been the least useful in the imminent fight against the Umiak. Tempo, Fireblade and Beryl are too senior and too valuable to waste. Talon and Spiral were sent on the mission specifically to tr...

Re: Page 217: Where is Cloud?

In context this should also highlight how dire things are for the Loroi crew - no hesitation to sacrifice one of their own when the cost of not doing so is that they all die.

War is a very ugly thing whose face people forget as soon as they are able.

Well, I made it home alive.

Lol I have had that same sentiment after some invasive surgery. I'd say make sure to get some sleep but one's body has a way of enforcing that whether one likes it or not.

Just, you know, make sure to wake back up.

Re: Page 213: The Bug Hunt is on!

You're also looking at the left side of the rifle. Shooters tend to not like getting hot brass to the face. As far as weapons that used cased ammo, it can also suck to be on the left side of a left handed shooter. Had hot brass bounce off their arm and land on the back of my neck. And stay th...
