Re: Page 101: And I will take VERY good care of you!

I don't think the Loroi are making any assumptions about human psychology. As physically similar as the two species are, mentally (if only by psi) and socially they are clearly very different. I highly doubt given that he's a diplomat that may one day rejoin his people they would risk psychological ...

Re: Loroi abilities, and Loroi Judo

Okay been out a while. Few random points not going to bother quoting. 1) There are a bunch of useful things that UFC and other MMA styles ban. a few off the UFC website: Grabbing the clavicle Throat strikes of any kind, including, without limitation, grabbing the trachea Eye gouging of any kind Stom...

Re: Loroi abilities, and Loroi Judo

Okay digging through responses clarifying etc as usual. Martial arts have a focus. Karate was hands vs swords. Source? The political centralization of Okinawa by King Shō Hashi in 1429 and the policy of banning weapons, enforced in Okinawa after the invasion of the Shimazu clan in 1609, are also fac...

Re: Loroi abilities, and Loroi Judo

Okay epic old school osmium rant in progress. tl;dr at the end I'm going to touch on a couple of the major martial arts points people have made here some 2nd hand experiences etc that I think are relevant to the discussion at hand. Martial arts have a focus. Karate was hands vs swords. You needed to...

Re: Page 90

Yeah sorry dude, unless you can safely jump into a system and then jump back out (along the same or a different vector) you can't really scout said system. Any disposable method of getting a snapshot of the system (like throwing a one time charge jump drive probe back one system) gets prohibitively ...

Re: Page 90

I think Alex is still running on fumes as he hasn't eaten in quite a while no? As one whose brain turns off with lack of calories, I can understand even if I agree it seems like one of the least relevant things to quote (that might somehow still be construed as relevant if only through some choice w...

Re: The Golim

Isn't that more akin to history than the tiny slice you usually get in fantasy/sci-fi/etc stories? Not like it'll all be relevant, but people like to have theories and it is nice that there is a lot going on... (like OMG those secretive sea creatures in historian space *ARE* the historians dun Dun D...

Re: Hyperspace

yeah I think Arioch's explanation makes it easily digestible, especially if you reference the whiff, doink, freeeeedoooooommmmmm plot. Although I'd say rather than putting, it's more like chipping onto the green from a bunker and hoping to roll into the hole with no line of sight to the green (when ...

Re: Page 88

The Loroi asked for information they would have pried from Alex's brain if the scan interrogation were successful. It is unclear if Alex is just a particularly powerful psychic (defensively at least) or if humans in general are stronger. From descriptions of the story I don't think it's particularly...

Re: Map of the Steppes (Seren-Tinza) Front

No AI, it's literally a solid state drive of some sort storing the information to be transmitted, a large capacitor tied to a jump drive (or whatever they charge when they charge jump engines) and a transmitter with a switch to turn on post jump. Shouldn't require much by means of inertial dampening...

Re: Page 88

I haven't checked the time-lines, but I think that humans are the base species for the Loroi. I think the soia re-wrote the genes of species with interesting abilities into their own "template" genetic code, maybe through some degree of trial and error, but once they had a viable species "copy" (or ...

Re: Map of the Steppes (Seren-Tinza) Front

It's basically just a polar coordinate system wherein the current angle is instead written as the vector perpendicular to the radial vector at the given angle. That is to say coreward points towards the center of mass (i.e. the point around which the galaxy is rotating) and spinward points in the di...

Re: Page 88

I actually figure that is probably within range. If they can tell precisely how many ships should be in a given region of empty space I figure it works more like actual vision than some sort of RPG sight distance thing (you have darkvision 100ft or whatever, like whatever does the darkvision doesn't...

Re: Farsense and Sensibility.

I thought they had to get into an isothermal gel-filled isolation pod in the center of the farsensing device and need to be nude for said device to operate.

see you can BS why farseers need to be nekkid ~_^.

Re: Farsense and Sensibility.

I think there could be editorializing. Otherwise nothing could ever be secret. There is a lot of knowledge that people have and while it is true that Loroi speak their mind, in no small part due to sanzai, I don't think leaving things out is out of the question. You'll always not be telling the othe...

except the historians dont need a anti farseeing device as there ships have no personnel on-board for farseers to detect so they are already invisible to the farseers Historians, to my knowledge, have normally manned combat vessels and employ the personality constructs solely as diplomats. Re: Page 88

I think I've settled on my preferred hate on the Historian conspiracy theory. The historians are playing the Umiak to fight the Loroi (and playing both sides to keep the war going). Their goal is to attain a piece of technology to counter Loroi psionic advantages, thereby leaving the historians the ...

Then again, I have not poured over the supplemental material as thoroughly as I might have, so I do not know exactly how viciously effective the interceptor fleets have been in blunting attack thrusts. In my mind I can't see them doing much since the sense I've gotten from the story and the extra f...

Re: Page 88

The difficulty in bypassing in a system, especially Umiak vs the Loroi is that they can ( and likely will if it looks like you're trying to leave the system) match your velocity and give chase outside of weapons range pummeling you for the whole time your engine's are charging and then if you jump t...
