Perhaps... but without a scifi level heat sink we are not getting laser pistols on par with guns for lethality.. and if we ever did the laser pistols power pack would detonate like a bomb if it overheated and had significant energy left.

In other words... the more realism is inserted, the less practical or possible the the fiction of scifi becomes.

Pulse laser ship mounted cannons? Sure. That COULD work.

EDIT: And actual sea battleships with laser cannons could fire waaay more than spaceships before overheating since they have the ocean to dump heat into.

Copy that. Missiles with heat-sensors launched...

Countered!

Laser cannon submarine. Fire and duck under water!

Heat sensor that!

Counter countered!

Superheated exhausted discharge from spaceships are directed at the surface of the planet, including the oceans. Submarine crew boil alive as heat rises to lethal levels!

It says something about submarines that the go-to to deal with them is to wipe out all life on the planet.

Time to find out if our boy has any actual close combat skills.

Also-- maybe time for the historian to send them some intervention.

Equip subs with maser cannons (microwaves attenuate less in the air than lasers, meaning the beam stays focused longer at longer distances).

Also I set up shore bases with massive maser cannon arrays... so when your fleet does show they get wrecked as the enter LEO.

Enough masers of sufficient power can kill spaceships literally from the ground.

And I have the whole ocean to cool off my shore maser bases.

And THIS is why no sane alien race wants to make open contact with the humans of Sol III... 'Yaw so Violent and ALL Crazy!'

'snicker' {this is my teasing tone}

I guess this calls for an appropiate number of ROG's (Rods of God).

Interestingly, anti-orbit laser submarines was the subject of one of Matterbeam's "Tough SF" blog posts, and he comes down solidly on the side of the submaries: https://toughsf.blogspot.com/2017/10/an ... rines.html

By "Laser" he ends up meaning "Maser". Oh well, close enough for government work.
