The balance of Beryl's particle-beam weapon may be off from that of a Beretta 92FS semi-automatic pistol; but again, a handgun is still only a point-and-click device that can be used to lethal effect by practically anyone -- with or without training.

The best course of action for him would be to give it back.
Re: Page 214: Ready for boarding action!
Maybe it's networked, and won't fire unless Beryl allows it to.

Thats not a laser, thats a particle accelerator, it will have recoil.
And a lot.

Or have Arioch weigh in.

No math can be done without numbers on the output of the gun bro, but newtons third law is a thing.Keklas Rekobah wrote: ↑Wed Dec 01, 2021 8:21 pmOkay, then show me the maths.Zorg56 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 01, 2021 7:47 pm"Nah, it's a pulse." But it most likely will be even worse then for the gunpowder gun of the same muzzle energy, because pulse gun dont waste as much energy on friction or cycling action.

If Arioch says "No Recoil", then there is no recoil.

Thats a game stats, not an actual number of energy.

The base premise of any fiction is that world is the same as ours unless said otherwise.
And if something is not the same explanation must be given, posing magic as technology is a pleague that destroyed modern sci fi.

Again, let us let Arioch weigh in.
@ARIOCH: Do Loroi particle-beam small arms have recoil or not?

I think when putting the pistol in the holster, the trigger notch may catch on the edge of the holster and press the trigger. And as in this moment you probably still hold the pistol by the handle, the auto safety system wouldn't recognize the false activation. And you shoot yourself in leg, like in this video.
Re: Page 214: Ready for boarding action!
About recoil - the beam weapon will have it. But weak. Plasma - stronger.
But all the same, it is orders of magnitude weaker than that of a kinetics with a comparable shot energy.
Because the mass of particles and the degree of physical interaction work with very different quantities than the system of a kinetic thrower on a chemical or electromagnetic principle. By the downward orders of magnitude relative to kinetics, of course.

Re: Page 214: Ready for boarding action!
And who is to say that the Loroi would not have incorporated inertial dampers into the designs of their small arms that DO have recoil? Imagine an SMG that did not kick, buck, or creep off-target while emptying the magazine.Tamri wrote: ↑Wed Dec 01, 2021 10:34 pmAbout recoil - the beam weapon will have it. But weak. Re: Page 214: Ready for boarding action!
Considering they can't fit dampers on the smallest shuttles, they're probably not that tiny right now. And certainly not so cheap that they would be put on every hand weapon.
Re: Page 214: Ready for boarding action!
Correct. A particle beam weapon would have recoil, but it would be no more than a fraction of that of a small caliber chemical slug-thrower - and the recoil on those is already close to negligible.Tamri wrote: ↑Wed Dec 01, 2021 10:34 pmAbout recoil - the beam weapon will have it. There's a lot of KE involved, but the gun is still quite weighty, while the projectile is infinitesimally light.

Re: Page 214: Ready for boarding action!
Good point.
The Stanford Linear Accelerator is well-anchored; not so much for any "recoil", but to stabilize the system during earthquakes. It could accelerate electrons to energies of 50 GeV. The rest mass of an electron is about 9.10956 x 10^-28 gram.

Cant be heavier then 3 kilos (which is, for pistol, is just absurd weight). There's a lot of KE involved, but the gun is still quite weighty, while the projectile is infinitesimally light.
Sure praticles involved might be light, but you can get a lot of kick even from light bullet if it goes fast, heavy slow bullet and light fast bullet with same enery will give same kick.
If what i assume is true and setting above 4 is dangerous to use inside a spaceship because of the power involved, it is capable of destroying like 15+mm of high tech high quality steel and damaging whatever is behind it, it should kick REALLY hard.
Re: Page 214: Ready for boarding action!
The energy of the shot, the penetrating ability, the high-explosive and blasting effects are not the same thing.
The adjustment probably concerns not so much the POWER of the shot as its FOCUS. In the end, we are dealing with energy weapons.
