Yeah, if you mouth off to the people who are higher than you in the pecking order, you risk getting punished with a job like damage control and then you end up being the sole survivor of the ship.

I don't think it is universal, but I do think Alex's face and body language do universally convey that it is an act of defiance.

I also feel like Fireblade's gesture is designed to be a universal "I'm watching you" - the finger's proximity to the eyes could be understood even by non humanoid aliens, as eyes are a convergent evolution device, and eye detection is a basic survival mechanism. Just holding a gaze is a powerful interspecies signal for cats, dogs etc. This gesture emphasizes and pulls attention to the more primitive eye only signal.

Then again, Loroi may consider this a "three finger gesture" (adding up 2 + 1), meaning this could have been the signal for "we're being boarded, play possum".

Well, that's a bit exaggerated. It's a fantasy story, so it's fine, but usually, in such a situation, you would keep a low profile.

Teidar are called 'unsheathed', likely for a reason, and Fireblade is a Teidar, a psychokinetic.

True, she does not emit any force from her body at all, Arioch said they channel psychokinetic force from 'elsewhere', so it is not and really has no reason for explaination. It does not strain her physically apparently at all.

If not there is no logical reason and it just looks awesome for Arioch to draw?

Actually, technically if Fireblade is good enough at psychokinesis, she does not need a helmet cover.

Why? She could make sure no air leaves her helmet via her psychokinesis.

Alternately she could also break open other peoples helmets by busting the air out.

Telekinesis, what she has, has so many uses it boggles the mind.

She is a superhero really, or could be depending on how skilled she is.
