"...or maybe she is an outsider."

Wonder if the implants have an effect on the normal Loroi aversion to touching casually - could they possibly make accidental skin contact very uncomfortable to nigh painful for her?

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

Though if you want the location & infrastructure more than you want the people occupying it, other types of weapons become far more economical than mass deployment of mechs.

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

Plus mechs would have to outperform infantry in armor and power armor (and combat drones) to such a degree at urban combat to justify the comparative increase in upkeep, and even then that only works if your supply chain can meet the gross demand to begin with.

Ham Slice was better than the Beef Frankfurters when I was in back in late 90's. Barely. If you were able to heat it up enough.

Re: 171: Beef Stroganoff is NOT GOOD

Hey at least it was not the beef frankfurter meal. Those had such a funk to them that even your sweat smelled like them after eating them. Despite being someone who loves to eat meat, I'd happily trade those for any of the vegetarian MRE's offered when I was in.

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

What about repairs? How much more difficult would an exoskeleton or larger mecha be compared to a military vehicle a tank or an attack helicopter or even an transport shuttle? An urban mech is only 5million USD a Firefly is about the same or do you mean something else? I was just thinking of someth...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

I'm curious to know what would happen if a defense contractor decided to throw minor scruples like 'operator safety' and 'nuclear proliferation' out the window and miniaturized a fast fission reactor as much as they possibly could. Could they get small enough to fit on a set of powered armor? I dou...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting

A weaponized Timberjack like shown above is probably the closest to manned military mechs we will see at our current level of physics and materials science. And even then only as a very specialized niche weapon or tools platform since it is going to be slower than a traditional wheeled or tracked ve...

Could the " You are in grave personal danger " have something to do with the current sleeptime ceremony? (I'm asking for a friend.) Historian: We were in the nick of time. You were in great peril. Alex: I don't think I was. Historian: Yes, you were. You were in terrible peril. Alex: Look, let me go...

Re: Page 161: It is called a Diral-Seii

Between all the chaff on the foreground, in the background Tempo now looks really angry, question is at whom - the junior officers being too far out of line, or at Alex who might be hiding something from her (the PDA, which, I'm sure, she knows about or at least suspects)... I mean someone did go a...

Even if Beryl does not immediately understand the implications of the icon and word, remember that she has a *very* good memory so it's a matter of time before she does piece together enough information to potentially start making more inquiries as to if Alex is feeling the need for "special accommo...

The Historian construct could be telling the absolute truth. Parts of it that is. Which is a problem of its own. Deception via omission of facts inconvenient to the speaker is a thing. Trying to manipulate Alex into not gathering as much information about his situation as he can points to the bytes ...

Re: Page 140 Discussion - "WRRAMMM!!!"

Hmm wonder if the cockpit going dark is a result of the station and/or shuttle getting hit; or if it is a deliberate ploy to minimize any signature for hostile sensors to pick up.

Edit: had left out a noun that was important for clarity.

"Pleasant science elf" vs. "Red-haired harpy". :D But aside from that ... would that mean that humans can 'sense' especially powerful Loroi, or is it because said "red-haired harpy" has it in for him? Would be interesting to know. Could mean that humans have a latent ability beyond just lotai; but ...
