Re: Zumwalt: Stealth and Armor in Modern Naval Combat
Found this on the web today - fascinating article on the history of the development of Surface to Air Missiles; the first part discusses the increasing risk to surface combatants from airborne threats and the need to develop a reliable ship based SAM solution. http://www.defensemedianetwork.com/stor...

Re: Zumwalt: Stealth and Armor in Modern Naval Combat
I would be wary of doing a tour of duty in a surface combatant with very low freeboard in a primarily deep blue-water navy. Especially looking at how even an aircraft carrier (which is designs to be air-sealed in emergencies) gets tossed around in this storm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnyFjCJPwt...

Re: Zumwalt: Stealth and Armor in Modern Naval Combat
Discord Your absolutely right about the army's 155 howitzers having been around already and with similar ammo. However those require that the beach or LZ already be established. Also its not quite so simple to just take an existing field-artillery system and mount it on a ship, case in point the bel...

Re: Zumwalt: Stealth and Armor in Modern Naval Combat
Regarding the purpose of the Zumwalt ships being built, its for the purpose of gun-fire support of marines and army in the opening stages of a beach invasion or inland fire-missions. That's why the emphasis was on the two main 155mm guns and not so much on missiles or other capabilities; its a ship ...

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread
I've been thinking long and hard about this whole retiring the A-10 thing. I love love love the Hog but lets play devils advocate for a moment and the reason to retire it starts to make sense. And darn it I find myself starting to think that its not so bad. What does the A-10 do that nothing else ca...

Re: A regular update schedule
Like Wasp69, I also came for the comic but stayed for the forums and eventually made an account to participate. Watching the banter back and forth and the occasional flogging of whoever mentions updates is much fun and often contains insightful view points. If the comic ever does end, I would only h...

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs
Good ideas but the projectile itself would still be hotter than the background void of space so a heat sensor would be able to pick it up as it left the ship. The cold plasma would help but it would have to be a very good match to background temps. However the combatants would clearly see the TCA sh...

Re: Greywind is Dead. Long Live Talon!
I'm with Cacambo and Greyhome; Greywind is in theory on the north end of the hundreds age range while Talon is allot younger. However perhaps some form of group picture with Greywind as Santa, Talon as kid making wish, and other cast would be neat. *Anti Voodoo offering* Can we have _____ holiday __...

On the subject of what happens when a mass-driver round misses its target - I present the following from Mass Effect 2

Re: Greywind is Dead. Long Live Talon!
For backing up files I long ago gave up on dedicated backup-products. Each product has its own proprietary format that can render data irrecoverable or in your case fails to restore properly. I've gone back to old-school Robocopy for my own backups for my 100GB of photos, 80 GB movies, and 40 GB oth...

Re: Greywind is Dead
Why do they say "long live ...." right after saying "... is dead!" Makes scenes when they say "long live _successor_". Just wondering out loud.
What kind of hardware specs are you thinking of replacing Greywind with?

Aren't we supposed invoke a variety of anti-jinx safeties on people who speak of the unmentionable topic? Or do we not do that anymore? Now where is that web-page on breaking bad luck? *rummages through bookmarks*

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs
Don't forget about inertia in all that. If you have high enough residual inertia your going to keep going in the same direction unless you can muster enough force to overcome it and actually steer. Artillery shells like Excalibur work with such tinny steering fins in just the nose of the shell becau...

About the Excel file conversion. The HTML looks great and is browser friendly; but I'm actually OK with downloading an excel or CSV file if it would save you some frustration.
Peace out

Gah! I don't have a way at the moment to post an image so you'll need to screen-grab > copy > paste > Enhance ! on your own :D I've taken a closer look at the ship on the screen in page 6 and have observed the following features. My money is on a 3rd party as its profile doesn't seem to match well w...

Re: Outsider Ground War
Just a thought about huge asteroid / moon type fortresses. Those are only effective if your opponent actually wants to attack whatever it is protecting or to defeat the station. The huge fortress isn't going to do anything to a fleet that is just passing through or has more interest in other strateg...

Re: Outsider Ground War
Speaking of ground based energy weapons see the XKCD what-if which though over-blown gives a pretty good idea of how energy weapons and atmospheres get along. http://what-if.xkcd.com/13/ For orbital bombardment with mass-drivers they also have a pretty cool physics what-if for impacts. http://what-i...
