Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs

After the War of Machine Ascension in 2033 we do. We only survived that thanks to someone writing a computer virus and uploading it to their network with his macbook. Like that'll ever work on the next crop of robotic killing machines we'd engineer. Oh please, as if a little death and destruction e...

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs

It's silly, but it's a silliness that most audiences have come to expect. I'd love to see a series that brutally subverts the notion though. Essentially everything in space sci-fi is silly. Honestly, who the hell would even send out a manned ship to do battle in space? It's 2010 and we're beginning...

Re: Page 88

Possibly, possibly not. A massive invasion fleet needs support, especially the farther it drives into enemy territory, and the more massive the fleet, the more support it needs. Loroi have a number of raider groups due to the line ship losses in Semoset; these units are perfect not just for hit and...

Re: Page 88

I have to disagree Osmium. So far the Loroi have maintained a stalemate purely because of their ability to detect the Umiak. Without that advantage they are sorely outnumbered, and numbers are huge in warfare. A surprise attack with a whole fleet on an unprepared enemy is more or less a coup-de-grac...

Re: Page 88

Oooohhh snap! Yeah boooooooy, ya got BURNT Stormwitch! this physic invisibility is just most …visible aspect of what humans can do. What ever shields this fleet from the loroi may not work against humans that learn to farsee. Or possibly humanity can farsee the disruptor devices due to some similar...

Re: Hyperspace

hi hi Part of the problem is hidden dangers. In 3d space you have a gravity sphere of the star, and those of the planets. The planets, as mentioned, are in an ecliptic plane (or close to it), and if you are heading towards the star from another angle you have more or less no chance of hitting any "...

Re: Hyperspace

But would you even need to take steps to come in at an angle to the ecliptic plane? It isn't as if solar systems are all perfectly aligned. Seems to me that having a planet drag you out of hyperspace is a matter of real bad luck, and then having it actually kill you is even less likely.

Re: Hyperspace

I'm not really seeing the danger of gas giants or other planets. Not only does is have to be perfectly in line with your jump vector, but you also have to exit a jump right on top of it. Considering that we're talking about possible planet positions you have to take into account a titanic area. Say ...

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs

Self-replicating machines are as uncontrollable as biological weapons. Literally. They are a guarantee of a bad outcome somewhere down the road. Because a self-replicating machine is life in every sense of the term, and we should know by now that life will not be controlled or contained. That doesn...

Re: Hyperspace

I'm telling ya: warp torpedoes.

A nuke isn't going to take care of those pesky ultraheavies in one shot, so just boot them into hyperspace and make your troubles disappear.

Re: Hyperspace

Yeah, you are on a simply flat trajectory between stars with an instantaneous transit time. The drive can't fail mid-jump because there is no mid-jump.

Re: Page 87

As for Terran technology level, military preparedness, and productivity: think of what happened here during WWII. In 1939 the world's top Air Force was Italy. In 1945 the best aircraft from the Italian period wasn't even up to the standards of a trainer plane in the USA. Germany had a production je...

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs

(Something to consider is that the jump drive concept is specifically designed to prevent the kind of exploitation you're attempting.) Is it merely a computational or engineering issue that prevents someone from making a calculated short jump of this nature? How about the other way around? Is this ...

Was thinking a bit about the "boarding action" hint from arioch. Perhaps the Loroi will board the Bell with Alex in tow to find the black box?

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs

Objects in hyperspace are affected by the gravitational pull of objects in realspace, but they do not otherwise directly interact with those objects while in hyperspace. The jumping ship would not collide with the target. Not in passing, but exiting hyperspace right on "top" or inside the Umiak shi...

No, the "reap the whirlwind" doctrine was more or less revenge. It destroyed priceless architecture, killed people, and didn't really do anything to stop the war.

Re: Physiological/psychological effects on Ship Design.

How I had seen it, German didn't lose it because of inferior technology or quality, but production capacity. Actually no. Germany lost because of bad planning and lack of manpower. They were actually at peak production at the end of the war (at least the factories around Essen), but nobody was ther...
