Re: Some questions about outsider
Look at how long we've been using nuclear power. Then look at the number of major nuclear plant problems. There are only three that I can think of offhand, Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and Fukushima, and they're the ones everybody has heard of and knows. As far as I am aware all of them were preve...

Re: Some questions about outsider
Chernobyl was ... a massive failure, yes. It was a full-meltdown of the reactors, caused by a combination of factors, and was, so far as I know, entirely preventable. Look at how long we've been using nuclear power. Then look at the number of major nuclear plant problems. There are only three that I...

http://www.atfx.org/photos/f14a.jpg One engine out - merry-go-round. Where do you get that? The F-14 can fly/land with one engine. It's a very stable craft. The F-14 has even flown and landed safely with an asymmetrical wing-sweep even on an aircraft carrier during emergencies.[28] Two tr...

Re: Page 99
Now now, consider this: The Chair Force won't want to spend any more money on new A-10s then they have to, therefore it's in the best interests of even their procurement policies to go about it the rational way. EDIT: Two wrongs make a right. Exactly, which they think is to replace the A-10 with UA...

Re: Page 99
Ok, but still it would be a new plane. Actually no since they've already done it before. Prototype 2-seater for night/adverse weather, only 1 made but still, it's already been done. And as being heavier than the former one it would need new engines with military rating. I´d guess that alone would m...

Re: Page 99
According to Wikipedia, they didn't stop it, just reduced the requirements a bit. So it can't meet the requirements and it screwed the other versions, obviously instead of dropping it we should just reduce the requirements. Unfortunately, the answer is probably yes. Remember, the F-35 is intended t...

Re: Page 99
The Harrier is a V/STOL, too, technically, but they almost never use the vertical takeoff capability, as far as I know. The vertical landing ability on the other hand... True. Vertical take off on a fixed-wing aircraft is almost always going to be unnecessary, and a bitch to include. Vertical landi...

Re: Page 99
I'm not entirely sure the F-35 has a 'niche' anymore, I mean, from what I can tell, the design requirements tried to make it a one-platform fits all needs kind of thing, and that just kill the whole 'niche' deal. The Harrier is a V/STOL, too, technically, but they almost never use the vertical takeo...

Re: Page 99
And speaking of close air support: I recall reading about the US Army, and their determination to keep A10's (one of my favorite aircraft) in their close air support role, while the Air Force keeps wanting to upgrade those big slow old aircraft to something that matches the rest of their force. Yep...

well, that is interesting, give the size differences. i thought it would be been smaller :/ but i guess if you have interia dampers and class i shields you need a big ships ( got to keep those high ranker officer protect and in comfort :) ) . I really like the lifting body type hull, but retains th...

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs
I did say that you don't use stations for defending the system against attacking fleets - that's what actual ships are for. Stations are, however, a rather important part of one's infrastructure, both military and civilian, that provide functions that nothing else can. Therefore, they will exist, an...

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs
Point to make: people imagine stations in star systems as some kind of immobile object... The fact of the matter is, if you want to protect a planet, you need the thrust of a starship to react to targets incoming with starship manoeuvrability, otherwise they will just go around your defences, or st...

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs
junk: two problems with rail launched missiles/torpedoes #1 shielding electronics from the rather intense EM radiation, not impossible but damn tricky. #2 assuming a rather powerful railgun launch, at 10km/s it takes a 30g acceleration about 33 seconds to achieve the same velocity, and given that l...
