Re: The Aircraft Image Posting Contest

Karst: based on what you say the ship was built for that purpose, to be able to adapt to whatever role was required, civilian, research, military, education, diplomacy and so forth. Such a ship is not a purpose built warship in the first place, instead the craft is a multi-purpose star-ship capable ...

Re: Distraction thread

*Googles* Hmm apparently if one of those exists, the planet stops moving. According to physics anything that exists has a momentum, and a vibration according to it's natural frequency. If one of these things ever came into existence, it would either cease to exist, or implode reality around it, both...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

There are devices created to clean the inside of bottles, called bottle brushes. For the life of me I consider them one of the most practical but most awkward to actually use items I have ever had to utilise, in particular I find them unbelievably cumbersome when trying to clean bottles with narrow ...

Re: Distraction thread

one trick with those rods is to coat them with a high powered resistant coat with a nice heavy core which may not be so heat resistant. Even melted iron dropped at that speed will deliver kinetic energy to gain a kinetic kill. So one trick is to coat your projectile with the most common element you ...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

Three things: First: the ability for ANYTHING to pump gas is limited by the pressure of the gas it is trying to draw in, thus if you start at 1 atm, the cylinder you are drawing the gas into (say an engine) can at best have 1 atm of gas within it, the next cycle it will have less gas available to dr...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

@Arioch and Nomad In the Distraction thread I continued to discuss mechanised magnetic clamping as a system that could easily allow automation of launching and re-capturing units, basically a pair of magnetic clamps that attach to a set (opposing magnetism) component on the fighter/shuttle/cargo hau...

Re: Sustainable Systems and Nuclear Energy

I'm no Nuclear scientist, however I have been taught enough about nuclear physics to understand that there are differing forms of radiation, and some of them are made up of subatomic particles, and high energy subatomic particles (which ARE what this kind of radiation is) can be used to bombard othe...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

My idea can be used something akin to that, in that the fighter dock could easily be left zero atmosphere when maintenance is not required, but the issue that really applies is offloading transports. Do you do so without atmosphere and be forced to wear comparitively immobile spacesuits for bodily p...

Re: Sustainable Systems and Nuclear Energy

The basic problem with radioactive decay is it is never as easy or simple as we desire. For instance, Alpha decay, which turns large elements into smaller ones, is common, and can hit ANY of the other atoms in the reaction mixture, including those which transmuted into Lead. Lead is very stable as a...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

Ooooh, so playing with dimensions does not equate to direct comparison with practical application. Understandable, however in my experience I like to play with placements as well just to get an idea of how I would set out my interior given certain size constraints, what else might be nearby (such as...

Re: Sustainable Systems and Nuclear Energy

... the ultimite goal is to shift the oribital path of your radioactive to a trajectory that isn't going to hit the earth nor the moon, using the least energy required. If we slow the projectiles enough, could they not enter near circular orbits and simply orbit as the glowing ring of rocks between ...

Re: Distraction thread

I foresee great utility in small designs in the fleet, yet a tendency to restrict the likely designs to perhaps three for various tasks for maintenance reasons (although fighters are likely to see semi-regular upgrade or replacement) I'd have a cargo shuttle with utility as a transport, the regular ...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)

Looking at your hanger, it appears rather... artificial in the manner you placed the craft. I mean most of the time your opponents will come at you from the front, so arguably the fighters need to launch in a forwards direction, thus having them installed at 90o from the front seems awkward at best....

Re: Sustainable Systems and Nuclear Energy

I don't have to ELIMINATE all the 30km/s once in orbit. You can just shoot backwards and the velocity required to penetrate the earths gravitational field will be deducted with relation to the sun in the first place thus imparting a different kinetic energy in the first place. You still have to brea...

Re: Distraction thread

If i were to try to crush the earth, I would use the moon myself... however I wouldn't be relying on a base there to fire projectiles, and i certainly would not place it on the close side of the moon. No I would use Ion engines, powered by the sun itself, and use the MOON as my projectile. I wonder ...

Re: Sustainable Systems and Nuclear Energy

less energy? SERIOUSLY? you actually have to AIM to hit the moon, while a shot at the sun requires is quite literally any form of decaying orbit... and it happens to land on Venus there are no problems either, and the odds of it getting gravitationally sling-shot back from the same isn't much of an ...

Re: A Reflection on the Hypothetical [fanfic] [FREE ALCOHOL]

Once again we meet our hero! And we meet the HORRIBLE opponent. And my smallest instalment yet :p Odds are I forgot something important and will have to re-write this bit, or retroactively replace it with some new entry “Greetings, Captain Rodgers” “Likewise, Captain Yui” “Reports state that my divi...

Are you exited?

Spell checker is great, but when you retroactively notice you typed the wrong word anyway?

It sucks.
