This is a forum feature. It can be disabled within your user control panel in Board Preferences/Edit Display Options/Enable word censoring.

In the current skin, there is a little orange triangle to the left of the topic name that takes you to the most recent unread post.

This is why your tests posts are helpful... there are a lot of features on by default and it's not always clear what they do.
