Re: The Technology News Thread

Let's not confuse modular robotics (individual robots assebling a bigger unit) with self-replication (most likely to implemented using 3D printing as a major technology), shall we? Creepy critter cubes those.

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread

i know blue light in APC are made for trooper to see but dont affect much the natural night vision for when they get out in the night. also it less easy to spot than say an white light in a black night. I'm pretty sure you mean red light? Human "night vision" is nearly blind, and therefore insensit...

Boosters which were heavy duty rugged construction. OTOH originally SpaceX was required to develop marinized hardware in the early days, due to a certain helmsman, I'm not so sure they pursue the same hardware requirements these days, but perhaps only because nobody's been asking about the status of...

LibreOffice is a little more free (as in speech) but the differences are pretty minor. Actually, the difference is most likely huge. (Best to ignore comparisons into the past beyond 2 years, but the differences in the near-term are big). Unlike Apache (and previously Oracle) OpenOffice, LO took a '...

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread

The padding on the Grasshopper's legs has been smoking away into the wind on pretty much every test video. That radiant heat is indeed quite nasty. It shall remain to be seen if the new bottom-end architecture of Falcon is up to that, but also the aerodynamic loads on the floor and engines poking ou...

In order to lean this thread back towards a subject it already touched on: Do you think those people are doing "getting closer to Highland Reusable Launch spacecraft capabilities" right? This thread and the guest art gallery are great, however I often feel like praising A. Koori especially. For example, lovely: http://www.well-of-souls.com/gallery/im ... ad_day.jpg

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread

My perspective on this might be outdated, but bear with me. Regarding the harrier-replacement F-35, I'm pretty sure the British navy is glad for it's development, if they can see it as affordable, as opposed to planning for catapult-only operations on next-gen carriers. It's not like the Eurofighter...

Really cool presentation indeed. Found myself thinking that plans for Triangulum colonization should be accelerated, so a push beyond the Local Group could be undertaken.

Meanwhile, I hope you people were, are, or will be having a pleasant midsummer/midwinter day/night; bonfire or not.

Re: M.O.O. 2

Pardon the necroposting, but I seem to have overlooked this thread. I don't think I can accuse this webcomic having sold me on any games. However the inverse case did happen. Homeworld lured me to Arioch's webcomic, and it's a space strategy/tactics game I would recommend (real time, mind you). The ...

Incidentally, I'm on the mailinglist for the SDL library... and a few months ago (it's speculated to be related to Steam on Linux) Valve hired the project's lead developer. For those that don't know, SDL is a library developed ~ 2000 to act as an OS abstraction layer for games to make them easier t...

Well, as anticarrot mentioned SpaceX, he might be thinking of the Falcon Heavy project as a near-match for dreams of SLS spec lift capacity. For the moment it appears the success of the already delayed deployment of FH is pending on the successful demonstration of the upgrades developed for the Falc...

And an atmosphere itself is not required at all? (Note: Mars has no atmosphere worth mentioning in this context, which seems to be terraforming). Is this suggesting we should hope to achieve an atmosphere of steam? To be boring, I'm still on the boat finding ideas of terraforming Mars to be incredil...
