hi hi
Usually, when confronted with bad science journalism, I try to find the source instead.
It seems that us humans still have a long way to go before we can have good confidence in interstellar motion and distances.

I've heard some talk of using something similar to the SCIM to skim the atmosphere and capture samples in aerogel without orbiting, but at this early stage in the game I bet more people are still in the preliminary stages of figuring out what to do.

hi hi It'd be interesting to see what kind of method they might use to bring samples back to Earth. They've brought samples back from comets before, so the in-space part of the return leg is already proven. But to escape the atmosphere... a balloon launched rocket? A sample of atmospheric gas isn't ...

hi hi I personally favor resistance against tyrants and conquerors, but to paraphrase Ghandi, regardless of what method ones uses to oppose the powerful 'one must be willing to invite suffering upon yourself.' If an army can't distinguish between hostile and non-hostile, then practically speaking, t...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)
hi hi The main functional problem with perfidy (rather than the ethical problems, which also exist but I won't be getting into here) is that it generally makes things harder for one's own side in the future. There wouldn't be rules of war if they didn't provide some benefit to both sides, so doing s...

hi hi I've been trying to move more of my workflow over to Clip Studio Paint, which has been working out really well for page setup and everything black and white at least. Although I still have to end up switching over to Photoshop for some of the color and effect tools. I haven't found anything el...

hi hi So I did some more research on bubble styles and digital techniques, and I saw some really interesting examples. Unfortunately, Photoshop can't do all the tricks with vector shapes that Illustrator does... That's pretty cool. I definitely haven't read enough old-school comics to notice those t...

hi hi I'm loving the (presumed) telepathy bubbles. They've been a long time coming, but were definitely worth the wait. I wonder if there's any particular inspiration? I'm assuming that among the Loroi present, Reed at least knows something about Alex's regular nightmares, since he mentioned having ...

Even if it's not life, it would have to be a chemical process that is new to science, which would still be a pretty amazing discovery.

While it's definitely too early to jump to conclusions, I've got a feeling someone will be sending a probe to Venus in the near future to take a closer look.

Speaking of black hole visualizations, Scott Manley's got an excellent one. It's a 360° youtube video (the first and only I've ever seen.) so you can look around as it goes. It's even better in VR, but still good otherwise.

Re: Pages 185-186: Really Weird Dreams!
hi hi If that is supposed to be Earth he's seeing, then it makes me wonder if he's connected to some kind of human-wide jung-esque unconscious, and Earth has already been hit by the Umiak or some other power. But my money is still on Fireblade, since the sensation he felt when approaching the light ...

Thanks for taking the time and effort to fix things. I've done enough web maintenance to know how frustrating and awful it can be, so it's much appreciated.

Re: This is why every AI needs the Three Laws of Robotics
hi hi And when you don't leave practicalities aside, the three laws become a real nightmare. Humans can't definitively define "human," so how is a robot going to do it, and how is it going to recognize humanness in real time? They're just so... semantic and vague. That's not to say that AI isn't pot...

Re: How to Make Mecha Work in a realish setting
hi hi You can ride over soft sand dunes and muddy ground... it just takes more energy then walking. Although I can't say much for soft sand due to my location, I've walked through mud, swamp, and snowdrifts. It takes a lot of energy. One of the biggest benefits of treads is that they have the lowest...

hi hi Try crossing an actual field as opposed to a track and you will get off your bike and walk. I bike a lot. I mean, a real lot. On roads, off roads; uphill and downhill; in the summer, in the winter on snow and ice. If you've got the right tires, difficult terrain isn't that difficult. Tanks hav...

hi hi Long term memories are especially crazy like that. I'm generally pretty good at accurately remembering those random things I remember at all, but I guess I tend to be pretty harsh in disregarding memories that are even a little bit fuzzy. When studying and identifying false memories, one of th...

hi hi I wonder if this is kind of like how deja vu works. There's actually a lot of important steps that happen in the brain to give thoughts and memories a sense of continuity and consistency, and so if telepathy ends up bypassing one or more of those steps, it's totally possible that Alex might th...

hi hi Incoming memory that's not the type you want to hear about... I know that fabricated memories are a troublesome thing when it comes to human brains, but I get the feeling that it isn't what Alex is experiencing right now. My money is on Fireblade having left something behind during the interro...

Re: page 178: Beryl's time of her life
hi hi I don't think so - he now knows that the Unsheathed traditionally don't speak if they can help it and Fireblade is (probably????) not able to answer telepathically, so that gives her a little dilemma. On top of making her uncomfortable be the means of the question alone, if he wanted to be fri...
