Re: Miscellaneous Terran question-and-answer thread

moon: right, forgot the over time part, my bad. on damage output, as a kinetic kill weapon it has pretty good punch, yes....but it is not equal to a metric ton of High Explosives....needs to be quite a bit faster to do that. Horseshoes and hand grenades. Obviously a kinetic kill weapon that misses ...

Re: Miscellaneous Terran question-and-answer thread

moon: yes, works under laboratory conditions, problem are and will be fire rates, barrel lifespan, energy budget and finally munitions for quite a while. lets just take energy budget, take the 33MJ example and compare fire rate of the 16" guns on the iowa class(nine guns twice per minute, which can...

Re: Miscellaneous Terran question-and-answer thread

lasers and railguns? yes it's coming, and lasers are already around, railguns not quite there yet...kinda like fusion power, but it probably WILL work which is not certain about fusion any time soon....not talking about how to POWER these babies either, that is gonna be an issue. Powering everythin...

Re: Couple questions

Rich people don't get to decide how their tax money is spent; government agencies and elected officials do. Please assign blame appropriately if you don't like how the government spends tax money. This is true, but I believe they are simply skipping a step. Entities with economic power can apply po...

Re: Couple questions

Theoretical research is a public good and the rich do not wish to subsidize such things because the marginal benefit received by such undertakings is small in proportion to their wealth. ;) That's not quite accurate. Most political clout due to wealth comes from corporations, and those actually lik...

Re: Couple questions

moon: reason is simple, very few rich people with that kind of problems. Very few people have that kind of problem in general, and this is something where under-representation of the upper classes doesn't actually come into play. The actual problem is with how research funding is handled which has ...

Re: Couple questions

That's absolutely true, but those are just tools being manipulated by your remaining muscles, and aren't really any different (except in cost and sophistication) from the body-powered mechanical prosthetics that my grandfather had. They require that the relevant muscles still be present and operati...

Re: Couple questions

And these attempts are only to restore functionality that the brain once had; imagine the difficulties in trying to teach the brain something new. So it's hard to see things like the cyber-brains in GITS being very practical, at least in the forseeable future. Right now we're incredibly limited in ...

Re: Couple questions

Yes, but my point is that space is chock-full of nothing. In order for there to be a fairly consistent 10ly limit there would need to be something to account for the high variance in star proximity, as otherwise there would be plenty of 20ly jumps.

Re: Outsider Wargaming - Polar Projections and Orbital Maneu

For example, in the early pages the Bellarmine captain states he's reducing velocity, but we don't see the Bell turn around and fire a braking burn; I think that would have just confused most readers. Unless I took 3 or 4 panels to carefully illustrate what was happening, which didn't seem like a r...

Re: Couple questions

What's the smallest you can make a jump drive? The jump field generators aren't that big, but they require enormous amounts of power. To make one work you generally need an powerplant big enough to push a corvette-sized starship, so that's the minimum size for a jump-capable ship. Such things as ju...

Re: Couple questions

sure, give humans access to 'modern' tech from the loroi, and a couple of decades to work with it, and we could possibly match the loroi in industrial power, despite having a smaller population....but it is doubtful we will get either of the two needed. The Loroi themselves? Probably. However I was...

Re: Couple questions

Humans surely could kick loroi in long term technology race, but I don't think loroi allow that. Earth is like District 9, but backwards, armed loroi anywhere looking interesting technology and asking what it does. ;) I doubt humans have much that the Loroi would want, and the best way to acquire t...

Re: Couple questions

Human space turns to humaniti protectorate, where loroi control all weapon producing industry & research. I highly doubt that. IIRC the Loroi have been space-faring for over 1,300 years while Humanity has been space-faring for less than 100. Loroi technology is impressive but not so advanced that A...

Re: Couple questions

As for naughty Loroi microbes, I must assume that the Loroi had sufficient medical technology and concern for Alex's health to have considered these issues before they cracked him out of his suit. Microorganisms co-evolve with their target species. We're vulnerable to diseases because they've spent...
