Re: Hyperspace

If I recall the the inside writeup correctly, the entry zones are well out in the system, in the pluto area. It seems likely that deeper entry jumps are possible, but outside of the capability of the civilizations in question to properly calculate and pull off. Right now in the war I don't think kil...

Re: Page 87

Beausabre posted a few times on the old forum about how the story seems to be structured as a murder mystery more than anything else. Who killed the Bell is likely to be of major significance down the road. I tend to agree. At this time its my gut guess that the Historians did it, and this system is...

Re: Random Discussion on Weapon Systems

If we're just talking about random weapons from other sci-fi, I've been thinking lately about Andromeda's nova bombs. Their stated effect is simple, even if their mechanism is unknowable. They turn off gravity. As a weapon system they're completely worthless in ship to ship combat, they don't do a t...

Nice twist. But I'm distracted from it by how painfully pretty umiak ships are. So good.

Re: Armor values

Regarding aft firing weapons targeting passing ships after the first pass: In the joust scenario, any kill in the initial pass is one that can't shoot back later. It's in both combatant's best interests to inflict as much damage as soon as possible. Any aft pointing weapons are ones that can't engag...

Re: Page 85

A question: You seem to be assuming that the weapon velocity is .1 c and your using it at 1 light second. Why? Engagement ranges are what they are in Outsider because any farther and you don't have any reasonable expectation of a hit. For a .1c weapon I'd think you'd only be using it inside .2 ls. A...

Re: Concept Fanart of Future Terran Ship Designs

Assuming humanity allies with one of the powers, I don't think tech transfer is all or nothing. They're clearly unlikely to give us a brand new battle cruiser design, but some fifty year old designs from before the war would still kick us solidly in the butt when it comes to advancement, and the sam...

Re: Page 85

The Loroi were using tech similar to 'current' Terrans in the empire formation war? The first Loroi emperor came to power sometime between 1323 and 1402. I'll assume 1402 for sake of generosity. 'Now' is 2160, so it's been 758 years of RnD then. The forum digest last linked says Loroi tech is three ...

Re: Page 85

I suspect I'm too used to much modern fiction and entertainment, the kind where the plot is powered by poor communication and withheld information. Seeing a military character actually being forthcoming is novel!

Re: Page 84

Man, I've been throughly beaten to the breach in starboard fusion chamber stuff. (For the uninitiated, in the game Homeworld 2 "breach in starboard fusion chamber" is a line that plays when a capital ship reaches critically low health. If you've played the game much, you probably heard that line way...

Re: A little crossover fun

Well, I'm a member of the 15th Expeditionary Fleet. Gotta wear the fleet logo with pride! Ultimately, it's a reference to all those bits of Homeworld concept art with 15s on the ships. The game's guilds, fleets of course, can make a fleet logo that you can substitute in for the federation logo on yo...

Re: A little crossover fun

Oh yes indeed. Most ships have three different 'costumes', similar variants on a theme, and they are split into typically four segments that you can mix and match. That ship is tier 3 escort, one of the ones with the most diversity. Examples: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/896078/VG/StarTrekOnl...

Re: sorry stupid question

I expect it's situational. In matters relating to first contact with an alien race and collecting intelligence on a potential powerful new combatant? Tempo probably gets last say there. Ordering ships around in combat? Prrrrobably Stillstorm's domain.

Re: A little crossover fun

In the game you can pick any number you want, and put a letter on the end if you want, so long as it is a nine followed by four digits. Probably to keep the player registry pool separate from any reasonable canon ships. And if you're super special, you can get an NX prefix!

Re: Imagining realistic energy weapons

I recall hearing about flywheel storage where the flywheel is a very long tightly wound ribbon, so when it fails it shreds itself and is relatively easy to contain.[citation needed] I suppose that'd cause a lot of waste heat, but any man portable weapon system could be dropped pretty easily. Seems l...

Re: Planetary Invasion/Defense

Not all wars will be wars of annihilation. Drones and killbots can potentially be discriminating tools and clear a foothold for you to put down at without directly risking your troops lives in the first wave. If you just want to kill everything, yeah, no reason to ever send anything down but rocks a...
