Re: 14.12.1972

Btw, I just read about an unofficial record of the Gloster Meteor at a speed of 1.017 km/u... ;) That must have been after 1951, when they strapped in the Derwent engine. BTW, SIX years after the war the brits were STILL unable to build single-chamber axial-turbos. Even the next engine, the Avon , ...

Re: Outsider Ground War

The Royal Navy sank the Bismarck. You´re still fighting the war, aren´t you? 8-) And imagine Hitler having the bomb in summer/autumn 1944, which, according to a paper i once read, would have been technically possible if the nazis had focused on it. I'd need a lot of evidence to convince me. Nuclear...

Re: 14.12.1972

And those satellites for GEO are usually around 10 - 12 tons recently. There´s no margin for a stage plus support. 3-5 tons of rocket and fuel doesn't sound like something to sneeze at. That´s not enough. E.g. the re-ignitable upper stage of an Ariane 5 ESC-B for 10t freight to GTO is around 30 ton...

Their men are more productive though.
"Productive", yes.
But if you mean "active", i don´t see humans falling short, with all the hot spaceelves around.

Re: 14.12.1972

But what's the difference of an upper stage in a multistage rocket, and having one available on the payload once it reaches orbit on a "spaceplane"? Basically not much. But with this Skylonthingy there´s only 15 tons of payload, and that upper stage eats this payload up. Since it´s not vertically m...

#2 improve thrust efficiency , one part interestingly enough by the pre-cooler, instead of running it from the exhaust(turbo charger style) it uses waste heat, brilliant really...assuming it works of course. Well, no such thing. Theoretical max of the oxygen/hydrogen-reaction is around 5200 m/s². I...

Why buying at all?
My grandfather was a farmer, he never "bought" seeds.

Re: 14.12.1972

Reaching LEO is still the biggest hurdle (either technical or financial). And the free tonnage could be used for a booster to bring a payload up to the required orbit. This is not just a booster, it is an entire upper stage, adding complexity and - cost. There's plenty of payload crossovers already...

*sigh* Ok, a bit more specific for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsiolkovsky_rocket_equation Oh great, this is the *first* time I hear about it  It is a difference to just look on it, or to really understand the implications. SSTO is a dead end. A wrong answer to the question. No, it's no...

O ye, of little faith Yes. Because i recognize a dreamer when i see one. That´s not meant ad hominem. Concorde "worked", too. And she was a formidable commercial failure. US Congress had banned Concorde landings in the US only letting her land at Washington DC, and no other airport. She was limited...

Re: Size of 'empires'

a good first step would be self sustainable orbital and lunar colonies, after that move'em to the asteroid belt to get a industry going, after that mars. just my thoughts on it. <edit> which incidentally requires rather large lift capacity, preferably at a lower cost compared to current practices, ...

SSO doesn´t work. Ask Tsiolkowsky. I can't, he's dead. Has been for 77 years, but by all means, he *surely* could have foreseen *all* advances in technology that would occur in the next 100 years... *sigh* Ok, a bit more specific for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsiolkovsky_rocket_equation SST...

Re: Size of 'empires'

The problems are the "living standards". You are living better and using more resources than movie star of the age of black and white. The luxuries are becoming norm and then necessities, but we don't need everything we have to live or even to be happy. Fix this and everything else would be "easy"....

Re: 14.12.1972

Realistically now that the pre-cooler technology has been found to be successful, they believe Skylon could enter production as early a 2020. SSO doesn´t work. Ask Tsiolkowsky. With that spirit, no one would ever achieve single stage to orbit. So? Who needs SSO? Skylon is unflexible, complicated an...

GM is pretty much exactly the same as selective breeding. Except your taking a gene which you understand and splicing it into the plant... ...and get a result you don´t understand anymore. scnr.
