Re: The Astronomy Thread

we're missing an admission that it's not 'Planet X', and that there never was one. It's actually in the literature that all evidence so far is compellingly (conclusively) biased against a fringe solar system object at least as massive as the KBO mass ceiling ? My vague memory is that that's not the...

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread

Yes and as you can see at the (current) end of that thread you have that same link brought up. Maybe they can get a ride to some other demo platform... I now also remember that a number of people from the industry thought the whole project was dubious (for reasons I can't recall) and that it was bas...

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread

I stopped keeping up when I read... I think a year or three ago that they were still stuck on that plasma detachment issue. So I guess that's not a problem anymore? Whatever the case, they need to put it up in space for TRL 7. edit- http://sen.com/blogs/irene-klotz/nasa-nixes-ad-astra-rocket-test-on...

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread

A shameless snark would say VASIMR is best of both worlds too. All the promise of theory and just enough reality to keep the $$ and enthusiasts going, its immaculate theoretical performance forever spared the ignominy of practical hazards.

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread

Now here's something I find really interesting (and scary; Star Trek got a lot of things right): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9M8yht_ofHc No credibility with anyone in the know. With any luck, Paul March is at Eagleworks Lab to rule out White's conjecture and eliminate it as distraction and/or re...

Re: The Astronomy Thread

I've got a vague memory of recently reading (on ArsTechnica, I think) an article that mentions near-consensus among at least one group of scientists that there's probably something Earth sized or bigger beyond main Kuiper belt but probably not as far as Oort cloud distance. Something about a recent ...

Re: The Astronomy Thread

Ceres might be a wetter and much more accessible Enceladus. Anyone know of a reason to send probes to Europa or Enceladus if Ceres turns out to have at least as much of an underground ocean as Enceladus and Europa?

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread

Skylon is discussed in fairly deep detail at NasaSpaceFlight's Advanced Concepts subforum. An (now ex-) employee at Reaction Engines Ltd reads and sometimes posts in that very (series of) thread.
