Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
hi hi It might also be worth pointing out that the Threat Well also displays a variety of colors. Huh, so that's what the tactical display is called... Huh. So they do. ... but then, I don't see any black screen behind them. Are they not 'true' holograms? [EDIT] On http://well-of-souls.com/outsider...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)
Rather than staggered fire for cooldown purposes, it could be an issue of manufacturing. Perhaps humans and Loroi can't reliably build laser/plasma focusing elements of large size, so they go with what works and build multi-barrel mounts. They'll bring the same power to bear on a target, but throug...

Re: WIP Discussion (Part 1!)
To q2: cooldown. The energy supply of reactors is continuous, but strong lasers cannot fire continuously, due to heat buildup between the mirrors. So, the energy of teh reactor is channelled through a second laser system while the first cools down. This way the reactor output is better used than ju...

Why is that guy saying "multi-track drifting!!" like it's a thing? I mean, I know manga can get flat-out ridiculous... but, yeah, "multi-track drifting!!" The image is a cap from a doujinshi (Fan comic) called "Densha de D" which parodies Initial D, but instead of cars they use trains. Drifting is ...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
The weight and pain of command. I think you cut a plausible line for how a Loroi commander would handle doubt and morale. It's hard enough to command when your soldiers only have your body language to go on (which they'll likely be pretty good at reading, honestly). It must be exponentially more dif...

Yeah, I imagine being near an exploding fusion device would not be conducive to one's health. Some might even say it's a downright poor way to ensure continued survival... :P (Poor) Joking aside, I think my confusion stemmed from the Umiak destroying the asteroid the first pair of torpedoes came fro...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
An interesting update. Looking forward to more. I hope you can clarify something for me, though: just how many of the Matveyev's away teams were lost? I may have misread something, but it seems to be either one or two...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
I was definitely surprised about the fact that they're carrying 20mm mass drivers as personal weapons on ship. I'm wondering how you're going to get around the whole "punching holes in the hull" issue (something to do with SHEAP, maybe?) 20mm is big enough that they probably have a wide range of am...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
I would like to point out two things: 1) The Outsider uses a modified GURPS setting with its own rules in regards to the tech level, something that only Arioch has access to since he is the one who wrote it. 2) The Marines do have advanced TL9 weapons with them and I think that I have given a minor...

I’m not saying that the Barsam do this, we don’t have that information yet. But I will say that it would be highly irregular, and a bit naïve, to make the Barsam not conform to that mold at least in some regard. On the one hand, I think I can say that I do agree with you on your views on religion; ...

Re: The Astronomy Thread
hi hi Speaking of grandfathering things in, we're still going to have to explain to children hundreds of years down the line why the solar system has a completely different classification system for planets than any other system in the universe. Wouldn't we just apply our classification system to o...

Re: The Astronomy Thread
I certainly wasn't surprised to know how the NH team feels towards Pluto's status. Nor am I surprised by how people in general feel about it. Personally, whether we ultimately classify it as a dwarf planet or a regular planet, I don't much care. What I care most about is the apparent lack of scienti...

Re: The Astronomy Thread
I watched "Direct From Pluto" on the Science Channel and if it was in anyway accurate, then the New Horizons team is firmly in the camp of "Pluto's still a planet!" I mean, they showed clips of the NH PI at a local school that held a mock protest to have Pluto be called a planet again. Basically, th...

Re: The importance of skill in ever more advanced wars.
The only way I can see AI being feasible and reliable enough for its intended use in direct combat is in a disposable locust swarm bomb fashion, rather than a direct and intelligent soldier replacement. At best insect intellect and no real need for IFF (can be spoofed/misdirected), or communication...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
It really hits home the fact that humanity is emphatically not in a good position. As you say, a monomaniacal superpower on the one hand and a superpower with a proven track record of genocide on the other. (Not that I think the Umiak are any less likely to commit such an act; just listening in on K...

Re: The importance of skill in ever more advanced wars.
I know the reasons why you "shouldn't" use AI, and I disagree with all that I have heard of so far. 1) It's dangerous: Yes it is, to your enemy. You don't have to make an AGI to traverse terrain and pull a trigger, and considering that Umaki are Umaki and look nothing like Loroi, that makes it full...

@dragoongfa I don't think you've taken a liberty with regards to Outsider humanity's CS expertise; not at all. I think you've hit upon a salient point and a question that has popped up pretty often in the forum. And that is "How has humanity almost reached the level of the Loroi so quickly?" This is...
