Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
And I will see your fictional conflict and raise you the Vietnam and the American Revolutionary War. RazorOne I know it's a fictional sci-fi fan fiction but you will do your points more credit by using example from real life and not from fiction. There are conflicts throughout human history that we...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
@Grayhome: by that standard the humans brought a concealed weapon to the negotiations, after all they are strong soldiers which are trained in hand to hand combat, and the other side in the negotiations are built like normal females that have never seen how strong they truly are. He could get close...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
Good points. I agree with them. I think that Arioch followed this approach with the rapid advanced of human tech levels in regards to the background of the Outsider universe. Other species advanced themselves by scavenging the tech of the Soias but humans had nothing but their wits and curiosity and...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
One thing that should be considered is that to the Loroi, Neridi, Barsoom and the Historians, that way of data structure in archives might make sense, to them. To us it clearly doesn't. But then we developed completely independently of anyone and have an entirely different viewpoint because of it. ...

Re: [Fan Fiction] Looking forward to the Mirror
Did anyone else read this: “These symbionts, these mitochondria as the humans call them. They are in almost every cell of their body and regulate numerous functions within each cell and…” “What is it Listel?” “I found tampering in the mitochondrial genome; the same kind of tampering that the Nibiren...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
To be fair, Zakharra, at the Gs the Enterprise pulls in a battle, I imagine any design, no matter how solidly built, would disintegrate without a SIF. Like in the Honor Harrington series - no vessel can survive their 500Gs acceleration without inertial compensators. Those compensators can and do fa...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Zakharra, in most cases the crew is sitting on a tube that is 80% hydrogen. That hydrogen can explode. If that's likely, the crew does not want to be near the hydrogen. In many cases it may not be possible, or may simply be pointless, to seperate. But having the capability is important. Only someth...

Whale wrote:That last line... Heh. Probably sounds a bit insulting.
I'd say the last line was both a way of 'yanking their chains' and a warning. Humanity is not going to be blindly accepting of the Loroi.

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
if it refuses to surrender when the enemy trains its weapons on it, then yes, it is alright to destroy it even if it is like shooting fish in a barrel. Killing them just for grins and giggles is wrong, obviously, but enemies that refuse to surrender -are- combatants regardless of their ability to f...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
Also, if a warship can continue to fight without a crew, why is the crew there in the first place? :P Repairs, command, redundancy (local control) would be three things. A vessel with no crew would be reliant on repair drones, AIs and physical back-up systems to cover those three things. They usual...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
I wouldn't consider that a surrender at all since one part of the ship is still fighting and the other part is trying to get away. If they surrendered, the ship would have to stop shooting, drop shields and stop trying to flee the attacking vessel. That is a surrender. What you are describing is a ...

Re: Miscellaneous Loroi question-and-answer thread
My spacecraft designs tend to have the forward section of a spacecraft be where the Flight Deck (but not neccesarily CIC or Aux Con) is, along with at least temporary life support systems (permenant ones being in the centre 'utility' section). The nose section can be jettisoned with most of the cre...

Re: Miscellaneous Terran question-and-answer thread
The eventual deterioration and replacement of Alex's only set of clothing is something that will be addressed. The "artifacts" collected from the wrecked Bellarmine may actually include all he needs. It would be very amusing if the clothing was clothes from the female crew members. In all likelihoo...

-snip- It wouldn't even come close. Anti-tank mines would still kill the tanks. Incoming missiles/RPGs and shells would still hit and incapacitate/kill the tank. The shield mentioned in the article might work for one incoming projectile, but not for all (where would the system get the energy? Unles...

Re: The "Real Aerospace" Thread
Meh. I'd say a Challenger II tank with SCAR* shielding would be pretty much invincible (barring direct nuclear strikes of course.) * My own term, standing for SuperCapacitor Armour (Reactive), for a type of electromagnetic shield where, upon detection of an incoming RPG round, the charge held in a ...

Re: What are the terran military really useful for?
I did point out that part of they reason they would be faster is because they don't have to carry all the materials with them. That would be done by a materials transport auxiliary. As for size limits on what you can build... I'll refer you to my 'just bolt the Wave Motion Cannon on outside' argume...

Re: What are the terran military really useful for?
Did you guys miss the part where I said they didn't have to be slow? All you need is to have the same TWR as military vessels (probably by fitting a bigger engine section.) And if there's a size limit to jumping, just build it smaller , and then build more of them . I may well be underestimating th...
